Verizon Removes DSL Supplier Surcharge

August 30, 2006

NEW YORK - Verizon Communications today announced that, effective immediately, it is dropping previously announced plans to impose a supplier surcharge for DSL-based Internet access service on its retail customers. A small number of customers who have already been billed for the surcharge will receive a credit.

"We have listened to our customers," said Bob Ingalls, chief marketing officer of Verizon Telecom, "and are eliminating this charge in response to their concerns."

Verizon Online began notifying its retail customers earlier this month of its plans to pass through a surcharge imposed by its affiliated operating telephone companies to cover costs associated with providing DSL service to customers who do not also subscribe to Verizon's traditional phone service. At the same time that the surcharge was to have been added, a federal government charge, the Universal Service Fund recovery fee, was eliminated from the bills.

"We continue to do everything we can to encourage customers to enter the broadband world by choosing one of Verizon's fast, affordable DSL offerings or FiOS ultra-high-speed broadband services where available," Ingalls said.

Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ), a Dow 30 company, is a leader in delivering broadband and other wireline and wireless communication innovations to mass market, business, government and wholesale customers. Verizon Wireless operates America's most reliable wireless network, serving nearly 55 million customers nationwide. Verizon Business operates one of the most expansive wholly-owned global IP networks. Verizon Telecom is deploying the nation's most advanced fiber-optic network to deliver the benefits of converged communications, information and entertainment services to customers. Based in New York, Verizon has a diverse workforce of more than 252,000 and generates annual consolidated operating revenues of approximately $90 billion. Looks like FCC might actually scare some folks.

Say what you want but I think they didn't expect the reaction they got from FCC and rather than have to go thru the hassle they ate the fee. Look for Verizon to raise DSL prices in next couple of months to compensate for that.

A shotgun blast to the head will clear that right up.

As long as its the advertised fee there will be no problem with that.

I hope the FCC really starts nailing ISP's asses to the wall over hidden fees which are not included in the advertised price of service. It's the only way the industry is going to be honest with customers.

Don't stop there..

Look for the other fee's that are bogus, DSL, wireless, and POTS lines. Sue them for false representation and dubious activity and use that money for more build outs

Unless the FCC had intervened, Verizon would have retained the fee, with or without justification.

hmm....

I just went thru this with Earthlink. I asked why there is a "USF" on my bill, and they said it's not a usf fee but some kind of connection fee. I said than you need to change the name of the bogus fee...it's less than 2 dollars, but it's not right..They need to do this to all the ISPs

Right on target. The customers probably weren't complaining(except for a very tiny number). The FCC displeasure and implied threats got them to pull back. And the price probably will go up after the uproar dies down. Probably slip it in at Christmas time when no one is looking and the news will be buried.

Yay!

I'm really happy about this. We should build on this momentum and shine the light on the cell phone companies that have been getting away with this for years.

How about this?

Advertise your service at $39.99, and customer actually pays $39.99. Wouldn't that be nice?

@verizon.net

we have listened to our customers?

Hmmm,
goes down in history with some oldies but goodies:

your either with us or your with the terrorists
we have no say on what price is charged at the pump
and...
we have learned the lessons of katrina
and...
we need tort (legal) reform so gynecologists can practice their love with women across this country

Really, there are some behind the scenes political rumblings that are pushing people's buttons trying to make everything seem hoe-hum... to keep the bums in office...
