Comments on news posted 2006-08-04 12:12:24: Boing Boing points to one man's solution for locals who were leeching bandwidth from his wireless router. Instead of getting angry, he divides his network into trusted and untrusted halves. He then sends all untrusted network traffic to Kitte.. ..

very funny , but if he doesn't want leechers why doesn't he just secure his system.

What fun is that!

We thought of this

We were going to do this at our house, but just got lazy. For anyone who did not have a registered MAC address, all webpages would redirect to an authentication page which would be some variant of goatse, tubgirl or lemonparty. It would however have a box to request registration on the network.

Someday.

That's a original method

You think AH-HA, I've got a connection!
Instead you get pictures of cute kittens.
I can hear howls of frustration from some people

I like kittens

But the owners of that site may get a little POed

Exactly. It's a lot of fun to do these kinds of things it's just the "finding the time" problem that always gets in the way. Personally, I'd love to set up a WiFi AP with extra range just so I could tempt people.

Those sites aren't porn. They're just disturbingly disgusting.

Which is why I prefer MAC Auth instead of standard security. MAC and port redirection lets me get the utmost level of control. The only problem is those people who know how to get your actual MAC address and clone it by connecting to your Wi-Fi adapter as either a false infrastructure or via ad-hoc (If the user didn't block it).

.

I dont think they would mind the traffic, as they have google advertising, and could get some more monies out of it

I wonder how the hosts of Kittenwar like the traffic?
Still..just lock it down. And yeah, I wouldn't refer them to pr0n. Maybe some site that pushes malware...

No. You don't have any trouble. The kid shouldn't be on your service anyway.

You know, someone around my house tried to do that, they even turned off DHCP and DNS, but I just made my own IP, and used Verizon's DNS servers because they were easy to remember.

If I could figure out how to let passersby utilize "some" of my bandwidth, without giving them all my pipe, nor letting them get to pr0n sites and p2p, etcetera... then I would do so... Any ideas? Anyone?

I would, ideally, like for them to do a "courtesy" registration, just so I could keep some kind of stats... I don't mind sharing because "sharing is caring", but I would like to protect myself at the same time...

I have Verizon DSL, with a Wirespeed 327 Modem/Wireless Router. I currently have the wireless disabled.

Down is 3Mb/s, up is 768kb/s, so I think FTP might be out as well... I'm quite well protected by firewall and anti-virus, and I know how to mitigate any network hazards, so I'm not too worried about that; not that I would reject out-of-hand any advice in that arena...

I'm not stingy... So shoot me. I guess I'm going the opposite direction of the guy in the article.

Cheers.

Who is "Roger?", and why is everybody saying his name on the radio?

You, sir, are a BLOODY GENIOUS!

Why didn't think of that my self? Simple answer: I'm not a genious... nor do I play one on TV.

Public vote for you...

Re: AWESOME!

Or take a more direct route and simply have it serve up a page that says "HEY PARASITE: GET YOUR OWN #%#$& INTERNET ACCESS!"

At least that way they'd be immediately aware he knows they're leeching off of him. Depending on who's doing it, they're liable to be so stupid they don't realize he's screwing with them and they're bugging Dell tech support and asking them why their "internet is upside down".
