If the EU or China had control of the DNS to you think they would give up control, hell no! did anyone else read this as saying that ICANN met with itself to discuss it's expiring agreement with ICANN to co-manage DNS?
Quote: "The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) met Wednesday as part of its consultation process on the upcoming expiration of its agreement with ICANN to co-manage the DNS."
Just curious if anyone else saw that. -- Forget 'em, Support the Indies. »www.ind-music.com |

| Hold on to your hats kiddies, here it comes!
Here it comes, the political rhetoric about what an SOB Bush is, and the eeeeeeevvvviill ICANN.
Then someone will say DNS should come under the ITU. That will be countered with "we don't want to have the corrupt UN controlling the internet".
Next, someone will split hairs over the ITU's association with the UN.
Inevitably, someone will be called a redneck, a dictator, or, worse than Hitler.

said by pnh102 :Hopefully the US Government understands that maintaining control over root DNS is a good thing and keeps it that way. Sure, as we have seen in the .xxx TLD case, right? The longer US would stretch it, the worst the share would be for the US, everybody can see it.
Ridiculous. The whole notion of ccTLDs controlled by the US is simply ridiculous. They belong to other countries, period.
And by general the wholeinternet is a worldwide phenomenon, not US as some uneducated would like to believe.
PS: is there *any* idea/thing/material the US would be willing to share with the rest of the world without any kind of return, simply out of altruism, for the common good? (No, I'm not talking about Iraq-styled democracy exports...) I doubt it. |

said by kamm :PS: is there *any* idea/thing/material the US would be willing to share with the rest of the world without any kind of return, simply out of altruism, for the common good? Hmm... off the top of my head: 1. Destroying the Barbary Pirates. 2. Bailing Europe out of WWI. 3. Giving food aid to the Soviets/Russians even as their government was actively starving their own people. 4. Bailing Europe out of WWII. 5. Rebuilding Western Europe after WWII. 6. Feeding West Berlin after the Commies blockaded it. 7. Keeping Commies out of South Korea. 8. Winning the Cold War. 9. Building and giving away the Panama Canal (the latter being a stupid thing to do). 10. Stopping the ethnic cleansing in the former Yugoslavia. 11. The world's best healthcare system. I'll stop believing that when foreigners stop coming here for medical treatment. 12. GPS.
This doesn't begin to include the generosity of my fellow Americans, who are always ready to open our wallets to various charitable organizations whenever disaster strikes anywhere in the world. And I'll admit, I'm ashamed that further patriotic dick-waving would only be possible after a Google search. But those are a few things done for the rest of the world to which the USA deserves credit. -- Tancredo 2008! |

Best Health Care in the world? I do not think so, I believe the US has lost that honour and is in fact ranked 37th by the WHO.
Of course we all know that America is the best and biggest at everything. |

| Just because people do stupid things does not mean the rankings are wrong.
Are Mexican plastic surgeons better then American ones? Should Mexico be ranked higher then the US because people go there to get their face tucked and their breasts lifted? According to your logic they should be. |

And your REASON FOR THIS IS WHAT EXACTLY????!!!!
Also, who is the United Nations? What do they stand for? Why were they formed? What are their responsibilities? Well....
CHARTER OF THE UNITED NATIONS:
PREAMBLE
WE THE PEOPLES OF THE UNITED NATIONS DETERMINED - to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind, and
- to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, and
- to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained, and
- to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,
AND FOR THESE ENDS
- to practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbours, and
- to unite our strength to maintain international peace and security, and
- to ensure, by the acceptance of principles and the institution of methods, that armed force shall not be used, save in the common interest, and
- to employ international machinery for the promotion of the economic and social advancement of all peoples
The Purposes of the United Nations are:
1. To maintain international peace and security, and to that end: to take effective collective measures for the prevention and removal of threats to the peace, and for the suppression of acts of aggression or other breaches of the peace, and to bring about by peaceful means, and in conformity with the principles of justice and international law, adjustment or settlement of international disputes or situations which might lead to a breach of the peace;
2. To develop friendly relations among nations based on respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples, and to take other appropriate measures to strengthen universal peace;
3. To achieve international co-operation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character, and in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion; and
4. To be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations in the attainment of these common ends.
