Well, it looks like the idiots taking the easy way out will either have to be watched by big brother (and anyone else who has instructions to the secret access) or learn how to use a REAL router (such as Linux). I would think it would be more economical and cheaper to push requirements/licenses/tests to people wanting a router, thus, eliminating or reducing the "lack of knowledge" excuses when these idiots get busted allowing illegal activity to happen. I see more and more each day our government doing things to justify wasting our taxes, and this is just one of them. Pay the government to force the technology and internet based companies to release private info, not to mention without a warrant. I hope every hacker in every foreign country picks a single day to crash every one of these devices in existence. I also hope someone comes up with a "hacked" version of the firmware so the issue could be avoided. I think it's time for me to move out of the US, because even though the grass may not be greener on the other side, I feel the laws here are becoming more and more restrictive, and is taking away our freedom, little by little... Now flame away, I'm done.

No flame from me.
I don't agree with moving out of our great country though.
If everyone follow that trend of thought "they" would win.
Problem is, everyone complains but does nothing. We have lost our ability to rally together and stand up for what we think is an injustice. We have become a complacent society. No more tea parties.
We now fear and loath our government, doesn't matter which party is in power. That fear has caused us to become lethargic, we just move on with everyday life. The silent majority isn't just silent, it's asleep, numb.
Makes no sense anymore. Anywho, I need to get off my soap box. I do agree with what you said, we are losing our rights more and more everyday.

And its going to be wonderful to see...

Its going to be absolutely great to watching as the government demands that these features be in the networks and then bear absolutely NONE of the cost of having them there.

It was exactly what they did when they demanded that universities have those features on their networks... And the universities were right to tell the feds to stick in their hat and bugger off.

Nor will they be held financially or otherwise responsible when said backdoors are compromised.

Just imagine...

How long would it take for one of these backdoor passwords to be distributed on the internet? If someone leaked it, imagine the damage that could be done. It definetly a very dangerous thought to say the least.

Sure, everyone could go the route of open source routers, but what about all the internet backbone routers? The FBI wants all router manufacturers to have backdoors. That includes the big boys like Cisco. Even if your home router is open source, what good is that going to do when the next 15 hops are all monitored?

Going open source isn't the solution. Making sure there are no backdoor passwords is.

How often are the already-included backdoors courtesy MicroSoft nee Government published online?

That doesn't lessen the grave concern over rights violations, however.

It would be instantanious and devastating. The Police and feds are people too and you can be guaranteed they will use illegally as well as legally these new rights. I can see the passwords within minutes in Organized crimes hands and hackers slowly filtering to as simple as a google search.

In other words

Official Announcement:

The government today announced that it is changing its emblem from an Eagle to a CONDOM because it more accurately reflects the government's political stance. A condom allows for inflation, halts production, destroys the next generation, protects a bunch of pricks, and gives you a sense of security while you're actually being fucked.

If ALL routers would have a backdoor just GUESS how quickly they would be figured out! If crackers know that a backdoor is comming in the next release of a product then they will be even more prepared to crack it.

If EVERY ROUTER would have a back door do they realize how quickly routing devices from your simple 4 bedroom LAN to major internet backbones would be targeted/attacked and eventually cracked and reconfigured?

Are these people even thinking before they open their mouths?

How crazy or even stupid do you have to be before you realize what you are about to do is possibly detroy IP communications!

That's the first thing I thought of. Even putting aside the whole issue of going against the very nature of the Constitution, requiring all routers to have backdoors is just an open invitation to the hackers of the world. Every single "FBI Backdoor compliant" network would soon become fair game for every hacker out there capable of running an automated script.

Time to buy a couple home router

Time to head to your local favorite computer store and pick up a couple cheap linksys or netgear or (your fav low cost router).

But then what if you have a 3 or 4 routers sitting behind each other? or one of those balancer router

Re: Time to buy a couple home router

Not going to do much good. You can have the most secure routing setup at home that you want. Any traffic that leaves your network bound for other servers is no longer protected by your 'secure' router. The other 20 or so hops from your gateway to the destination and back are the routers you should be worrying about having backdoors...

Already Hacked

I find it disheartening that the main topic is about wanting to make this legal, instead of the fact that it is already happening .............

Even though the mandate has not yet gone into effect -- and it is in fact being fought in the courts -- many hardware makers like Cisco, Juniper, Acme Packet and others already include this backdoor in their hardware, says Templeton. To see for yourself, Googe "CALEA support." You'll be frightened by what you see.

Re: Already Hacked

If this happens, then there will soon be a booming black market for a router modded chipset.

Failing that, then its back to smoke signals and tin cans & string for future communications, not to mention Ham Radio, Walkie-Talkie's and encryption using a form of Navajo language.

I don't understand so call me stupid.

What would they do with access to the routers? I mean, look at ACLs or default routes? I guess they could black hole traffic to another destination but that will double the bandwidth needed for that stream and increase the utilization of the links that do not belong to the gvt.

It's not like they could port span unless they had physical access as well as logical access.

the article doesn't expand much on what will actually be done in the router once the back door has been accessed.

I fully understand the concept of wire tapping via CALEA and SII (as I'm in the idustry) but how does giving every router a back door apply?

Big mistake.. Without independant control... FBI has no case

Every defendant in our court system can simply claim the FBI planted the evidence.

I.E.. They're unsupervised, collecting data with no over-site. They have a vested interest in conviction.
At which point the judge dismisses the case, all costs assigned to DOJ. Or a jury of peers renders a not guilty verdict.

ISP involvement should never ... ever.. be bypassed..

The ISP as an un-interested 3rd party and should be the people doing the data collection and archival of the evidence. If any dispute occurs, they have the official (unbiased) records..

====

Ok.. now that we've established that this probably isn't for law enforcement purposes. (Evidence not likely to accepted by a court, since ISP can neither confirm nor deny the traffic actually crossed their network.) What is left??? (Spying, Financial advantage, Extortion, Blackmail, etc.)

A backdoor in a FIrewall makes more sense

It actually would make more sense to have a back door to a firewall software programs than a router. All my firewall is going to do is block the backdoor traffic that my "new" router would let in. When an orgainization starts requiring back doors in OS's or firewalls, then start worrying.

It is way easier to destabilize a software firewall than router (granted that the router is not cheap itself).

So does anyone have any real proof this is bush other then the fact that is what they want to believe? BS things have happened under dem presidents too.
