| Infrequent? Doubt it...
My mother-in-law called to cancel her service 3 weeks ago after migrating to DSL. The rep told her she has 3 weeks left in her year contract and couldn't cancel it then without incurring the ETF. Right... So she called on the day her contract was up and still spent 15 mintues on the phone trying to cancel the account. The rep knew she had come in over her DSL last connect and started telling her about her provider and trying to keep her on aol's BYOA service. I told her she should file a compaint with the state AG... this kind of practice is unacceptable! |

| Dead mother sued for not paying her bill.....
I can see it now, from the pages of the same lawyers used by the RIAA and MPAA; AOL sues dead woman over unpaid bill.
Since she didn't call in herself, she can't just cancel the service. We need to make sure she understands the value of AOL before she disconnects. |

I saw the link on the forums but was scared to listen. I worked for AOL (they outsourced) for only a few months before I was fired. I'll admit it, i hung up on a customer (that night they said i was just going to be written up but the next day they had a pink slip waiting for me) but you wouldn't believe how happy I was the next day for not working for them again.
1. Getting written up for downloading IE 4.0 (i believe it was 4.0)because we had no training on it and we are told to support it but because it wasn't approved to be on our computers they wrote me up. We never even saw it!!!!!
2. Making a phone call on my cellphone in the breakroom. Get this one: Personal calls could be accepted on a personal line at your cube but you couldn't make long distance phone calls. Okay, that sounds fine so I proceed to make a long distance phone call on my cellphone in the breakroom and I get written up for that.
3. Being told on 3 separate occasions to reduce my talk times at closing times and even if the problem is not solved I need to "get them off the line."
There topped rank person who is still my friend and who I am always helping out to this day had great great numbers. You know what he said on EVERY call. "You need to delete and reinstall and do a disk defrag." Didn't matter what the situation was that is what he said and they loved him because he had high call volume.
I ranked my experience with aol tech support as the worst ever. Even worse than my short 3 month stint selling kirby vacuum cleaners. -- One never notices what has been done; one can only see what remains to be done. -Marie Curie |

They are trying everything to hang on to their subscribers. In the end it's pointless... just go out of business already AOL. Technology has passed you by and you're a has been. |

You should be able to cancel online by entering a password and the answer to a secret question when you sign up. This should be a law!!! |

People make up stories ALL THE TIME. It's hard to seperate truth from fiction. I could call my isurance company and say "My father is in the hospital with a heart transplant, and I don't have the money to pay for the bills. And need to lowre this isurance or get a nothe rprovider." You can make up anything you want, whos is going to know the difference?
There are so many liars in this world now, I wouldn't be suprised.
Please AOL will do anything to cover there asses, and I feel bad for the REP. They have so many guidelines and rules to follow, and she probably would of gotten fired if she didn't try to save the customer. How do you know the REP's mother didn't die?

| AOL is the devil
back in the day, I worked in AOL's retention department. I got canned for posting directions on BBR on how to get PS2 Online to work with AOL DSL.
MUAHAHAHAH. Best thing that ever happened to me. You should hear some of the practices that went on in the retention department. It was despicable. AOL insisted that we keep the customers at any cost. Some people took it way too far-but I can blame NO ONE but the management. -- -Put this in your profile if you know someone who is fighting, has survived, or died from ninja attacks. |

O People have no consideration for other people, but themselves, and it's true. Hmmm, let's see.
Daughter offered up coroner's case number for the incident. Airlines (when they offered bereavement fares) used to ask for the name of the funeral home and/or hospital where the person died for confirmation of someones death.
Sorry, but I have NO sympathy for the rep or AOL. They aren't covering their asses, they are trying to cover their profits. If the rep would have gotten fired for cancelling an account, then that is AOL's issue. It's not the rep's fault that people want to leave their service.
BTW, for the betterment of all, I edited the spelling issues of your post to make it readable. |

I used to work for Client Logic doing Bell South Tech support. I got written up for coming to DSL Reports to save a customer. He had talked to everyone up through level 3 and was calling to cancel. He was having trouble with he Linksys router, I knew I had just read the solution here and went there and got him working, so he stayed. I was written up for coming here. I explained to my suprevisor my reason for coming to DSL Reports. I was told in these exact words "Your job is not to help the customer it is to answer the phone" I hated every second I was at that job.

I just listened to the recording and I can only say that was MILD compared to a lot of things I heard when I worked in retention there. I knew of co-workers that would insult customers left and right on the phones when they would not listen to the script. AOL is the biggest piece of crap company ever to be created-I'd put them up there with Enron, Worldcom, etc. They are a ticking time bomb.

| Happened to my mother!
Happened to my mother too. Almost down to the letter in the responses that are in the article. They would not accept that she wanted to cancel. She demanded to speak to a manager/higher representative, and he did the same thing, but at the same time putting her down. Basically it was like this when she got to the manager:
Mom: I'd like to cancel but your staff won't let me. AOL: What seems to be the problem? Mom: I want to cancel. I don't use AOL anymore and I am not going to pay for it. AOL: Are you having issues that we can fix? Mom: NO. I want to cancel. Take me off your service. I do not want AOL anymore. AOL: If you're unhappy with your current plan, we can credit you for the month and sign you up for.... Mom: NO. I WANT OFF. I DON'T WANT AOL ANYMORE. CAN YOU NOT UNDERSTAND THIS? AOL: I'm sorry ma'am, but you've interrupted me. Now I have to start all over again.
This went back and forth for a good 10 minutes, with the AOL staff hounding her about letting him finish his sentences and offers and whatnot. Since my mom was on repeated automatic biling from the credit card, she HAD to cancel and not hang up.
But at this point my dad, who is normally pretty quiet, picked up the phone because he heard my mom yelling, and he started being just as unreasonable as AOL was, but on purpose to make the staff angry with them in the hopes of them cancelling their service. He said things like "Listen, I can't understand you. Go back to Bangladesh or wherever you are and put me on with someone who speaks English!"
It went back and forth and eventually they did cancel her. But we couldn't believe what she went through. We emailed her this article though. hopefully, people will be testing it out and AOL will get whatever is coming to them. -- »www.theexitwound.com |
