Comments on news posted 2006-05-23 09:25:38: Late last year a furor erupted among many countries who thought that ICANN was far too America-centric. Expect that discussion to heat up again after allegations have surfaced claiming government officials pressured ICANN to scrap the .XXX domain. ..

If this is true......

What a bunch of crap it seems to me it would make filtering a whole bunch easier. You could say alright you want to do porn ok then you have to register on the .xxx domain. Sure there is no forcing off shore porno vendors to go to .xxx but is sure would be helpful in those countries that might require it.

Maybe they are trying to ward off potential liabilities when someone plays the censorship card. I mean, using the public library computers wouldn't be fun anymore, and those previously 'doing their thing' will have to go back to the magazine racks in the basement to have their fun.

Magazines worked for me, I remember the first Hustler Magazine I looked at as a teenager snort, drool, pant.

This is why I think that complete and total "Net Neutrality" is needed, and also for ICANN and the DNS system. I don't like pr0n, but ICANN (which has "governance" over the Internet) should be allowed to make its own sovereign policies and not those influenced by governments or corporations. If a country wants to filter out objectional material on the Internet that is on its own turf, fine let them do that.Due to the nature of the Internet and the DNS system it has been shown that ANY country that has power and influence over the Internet will bend it to its will, which will affect everybody.

Having an xxx domain wasn't going to do anything that the company promoting it said it would. And that is - segregate all porn into one place where it could be blocked by those who didn't want it. The porn industry could still use .com or .country initials, etc. So it was just another place they could sell their services. I think the only one who cares is the company who was going to manage the new domain's registrations and collect all the fees.

Why make a domain for porn?

There's already porn on every domain, why add another?

And porn isn't the only bad thing on the Internet, go to rotten.com or democrats.org for example.

Wouldn't it be better and easier if they came out with a .Kid domain and you only allow your kids to access .kid sites instead of trying to move all porn (only) to a new domain?

And don't get me wrong, the .Kid domain has its flaws too.

Of course, your post - once again - has nothing to do with the matter at hand, namely that did the US hijack ICANN?

We all know that it did, upon request of Falwell-like lunatic evangelist retards.

You never gonna get that as long as 10 out of the 13 root servers on US soil and half of them under direct DoD or other US govermental or educational control.
No way.

I, for one, fully support OSRN:»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ORSN - and don't think it's an accident that Paul Vixie has joined OSRN last year.

I agre with most of your post, except for the "filtering out" part. Who decides what is "objectional material" and how about letting the individual make the decision to filter out the particular material?

I'm all for the idea of a .xxx domain, but I'm afraid it would not have much effect on the problem.

Porn peddlers will just move to a foreign server and continue doing what they do now: register domains like whitehouse.com, etc...

Internet scum would find a way to infect .kid domains also. Let's face it, the internet is exactly like the outside world. Would you let kids venture alone outside?

Re: If this is true......

How about posting the proof that it did. As far as I know, the government can lobby for what it wants, just like any lobbying group.

To say it hijacked ICANN must be proven by facts that showit forced ICANN to do something it didn't want to.

That's one of the wisest explanations of this issue I've heard. (seriously, not sarcasm.) I think I'm going to have to start using this quote in my arguments.

((But I don't know about that whole Brazilian soccer owning thing.))

Tkjunkmail........ well, well, well.....suddenly you're not pro business. what happened? are you ashamed of sex and sexuality? I'm not and as a tax paying citizen I think it's a good idea. contrary to what most right wing cabal members are writing here it will centralize porn and make it easier for parents to block their kids from viewing it. typical Republican misinformed hide your head under a rock reaction. know why porn is so prevalent? because major blue chip corporations on the stock exchange are making tons of money from it.... money dictates in the USA. you people are amazing. anything you don't like or agree with there is no margin.... well most men and a lot of women like porn for the most part so it's not going away. learn to live with it.

Oh yes cause all the .com porn sites will suddenly move over to .xxx....oh wait, no, no they won't as no one is being forced over to the domain nor should they.

All .xxx does is provide another domain that porn sites that want brand consistency have to buy and non porn sites have to buy to avoid being associated with porn.

Boy this topic bring out all the idiots, raving lunatics happy shiny people.
