who uses comcast email?

why would you use the email service provided by comcast? it just ties you down to them if you hand that email out to ppl.

Gmail makes that obsolete...

Good for them

I have been using Spamhaus for the past several years on my own mail server with excellent results.

Hosted Gmail for domains makes regular Gmail obsolete.

Spamhaus is a nuke in a conventional war

The problem here is that Spamhaus has a nasty reputation for blocking whole ranges of addresses instead of just the sources of SPAM. It will surely cut down on SPAM. But it will also block legitimate emails at a higher rate than other SPAM filtering solutions. I fear that Comcast users, and that includes me, will start missing some emails that they really want.

Comcast email?

What's that?

Gmail has, IMHO, the best SPAM filter.

Spamhaus

Good. Their current filters only catch about 70% of the spam. I did some testing to see how effective it was and had temporarily turned the blocked message folder on just to see what got caught. Normally I just set it to automatically delete the spam. I would certainly like to see more aggressive blocking of known spam sources.

well I hope it helps, I know Cox is really up and down with spam... I don't really use it much except for a few things..

either way, yeah gmail works almost too good for spam filtering... 300-some odd spam emails in one... 40 or 50 in another.. never see 'em in my inbox.

the best I've got is either gmail, yahoo, or my own .com through godaddy... decent webmail for what it's worth.

running your own email server beats them both

I've been doing that for years...but there is something to be said about Gmail's fabulous AJAX interface, free POP, and plenty of storage/archive space. I finally switched over to hosted gmail and turned off my own mail server.

Not sure if anyone ever thought about this or not. There's tons of comcast ip addresses that are listed on RBL's including Spamhaus. I hope Comcast takes steps to get ip addresses un-blackholed.

Maybe it will force Comcast to deal with their users who are either spamming or infected with bots.

tried and gave up

When I added cable (COMCAST) to the DSL service I tried Comcast mail and the spam rate was 4 time higher than a long standing email address with my unix based DSL provider. I gave up and have stayed with the DSL provider for email. The cable has been fine for connectivity but both their webpage space and email are horrible even worse than the DSL company 5 years ago.

how is an inbound mail filter going to cause comcast to deal with infected boxes?

If Comcast is blocked from other ISPs by the same service they signed up for, then they will have issues. Imagine having your domain on a block list administered by the same service you get that block list from. How do you block yourself?

Now, if internal Comcast member to member mail is also screened, that could be interesting too.

Re: who uses comcast email?

Because you have some people like myself that don't like any web based e-mail. I also don't trust Google with anything except as a search engine. I have 5 Comcast e-mail addresses and only 1 of them ever gets spam.

Your reasoning is not correct.

Spamhaus will be used to check/block email coming INTO Comcast's servers, not going out.

Other ISPs that currently use Spamhaus filtering will already be blocking Comcast's emails if they were blacklisted by SH

99% of those IP addresses are dynamically assigned residential accounts, a large number of which host compromised computers running spamming proxies. Until Comcast implements outbound port 25 blocking across the board, I hope those IP addresses remain listed. Otherwise I'll have to create my own, local blacklist to cover them.

POP blows chunks.

Storage storage space is dead cheap, too. Granted, I might actually have to spend money on my storage, but my space limitation is then the size of the drive, not some limit set by someone else. I also don't have to worry about anyone else sifting my mail spools for advertising (or other) "opportunities".

That may be ironic, but it's not going to cause any more issues than there currently are.
