I still can't get over how much a stand-alone cable broadband line costs if you don't want to pile on the services.
$45 through Time Warner, much more through Comcast I think. This bundle-madness irritates me. |

And as soon as this becomes and obvious trend, don't you think that they will both do as cell providers have? 2 year contracts for a possible 9 month or 12 month reduction. Year two, the obligated additional year, will be full rate?
These deals are for new customers. They do track the price shoppers. All this will do is cause them to go away.
Remember when you could get an actual $80 check for switching long distance? Sheesh, I used to make about $170 a month just constantly cashing long distance checks "just for switching" - Honestly, sometimes I never knew who my carrier was. I got the check, I'd endorse it and deposit it.
Ultimately, the check promos stopped. They realized it was a loss. When one side stops, so will the other.
I personally see the two sides reducing their specials all together or SERIOUSLY cutting them down. |

1 edit | DSL rates going up? I just don't see it.
Is this supposed average increase based on people who just pay their "full" $39-$49 DSL rate and not bother re-rating to a new package deal?
Come on, for the two biggest telcos, DSL is cheaper than ever. Verizon has their $14.99 DSL plan and SBC has their $12.99 deal. Even existng SBC customers have been able to get re-rated to 3mbps service for $17.99. Others just hop ISPs to get a good promo.
SBC also *finally* reduced the regular month-to-month price on their DSL circuits. It's not *just* a promo war.
Following the chain of linked stories, I don't see any explanation for the expected increase in average price paid for DSL. There's no reason for the average to go up.
Bundled service can't be included in the argument because some cable companies (Comcast is the most notorious) charge significantly more or give less speed, practically forcing you to buy basic cable with a cablemodem.

This "story" also forgets that as prices have dropped more people are trading up to a faster (and more expensive) connection. As more people go from, say, 1500/384 for $18 to 3000/512 for $26 the "average" price goes up, but it's an apples to bananas comparison. A legitimate analysis would compare the same speed tier price now vs. last year or the year before. You won't find a legitimate analysis in these pages though.
Even Sprint, who arguably has the highest prices for DSL, is lowering them.

1 edit | Prices aren't going up
They say prices are PROJECTED to go up less than a dollar, and that doesn't take into account inflation!
Inflation was 1.9% in 2005 (source: Federal Reserve)
Their comparison was from 2005 prices, to projected 2006 prices (how they can claim to project that accurately I have no idea).
Asuming inflation is the same in 2006, then the inflation-adjusted price would be $38.49...slightly lower than the price in 2005.
So in reality, prices are projected to go DOWN next year. But I suppose inflation doesn't matter
And as other's have said, that's also only the average connection price that's going down a bit. Price per kbit/sec is going WAY down. |

I just don't buy that. I had a cable internet connection with NO installation costs and no additional taxes at one point. No questions asked. The network is already there (unlike FIOS where the lines have to be run to the home).
If this service would be offered I might actually consider switching to DSL. |

The average DSL price data is the TIA's own projected numbers. If they could have spun them like you did to suggest prices were seriously dropping, without being laughed at, they would have. How do you spin the increasing cost of POTS?
As for your disregard of naked DSL, that's a curious argument. I should pay for a landline I don't need because it helps maintain the wires? |

You're arguing the difference of an increase in pennies to the difference in the decrease in pennies. The fact remains the average price paid by consumers for DSL is not dropping. quote: And as other's have said, that's also only the average connection price that's going down a bit. I guess since you have nothing legitimate to say you resort to the usual lame "fanboy" crap.
As for your disregard for reality, that's a curious troll. Covad will gladly sell you "naked DSL". It costs more because Covad has to lease the loop, but hey, you'll be "naked".
Where is "Fleeting", anyway? Must suck to live there. Over here in the real world, my DSL + phone line costs less today than it did six years ago, and the speed is eight times faster. -- Toolmaster of La Grange. |
