What

30/768 wait is this a joke that I haven't caught on to? You need at least around 1 Mb/s just to keep up with the acks. I thought Cablevision's 30/2 offering was pathetic, this makes it look appealing.

As a side note...

...when will these companies realize that "Xtreme" is beyond lame. What's next...they going to say it's Hella-cool?

Road Runner

Here in Guilford County in North Carolina you have a choice with Road Runner.

Regular Road Runner for $44.95
5mbps downstream and 384kbps upstream.

Road Runner Premium for $84.95
(which includes Wireless Home Networking at no extra charge)
8mbps downstream and 512kbps

Road Runner Premium for $69.95
(When added with Cable or Digital Phone)

Road Runner Premium for $64.95
(When added with Cable and Digital Phone)

And then you have Road Runner Business Class.

SureWest

All I have to say is... SureWest broadband. Symetrical fiber to the home. 10mb/10mb for $49/month, or 20mb/20mb for $99. Can't beat that. Too bad they are only in the Sacramento, CA area.

I work for a major cable modem ISP. In Fairfax, VA. our fastest cable modem tier is 15/2 mbit. Even on our secret internal speed test server, I've never seen anyone get faster than 6.1/1.2 mbit/sec with perfect RX,TX,SNR on their cable modem. I believe it's docsis 2.0. The Point is: with current cable modem technology (HFC routers and CMTS's) and other misc equipment limitations, it's not worth paying for anything faster than 5/1 or maybe 5/2 because you probably wont see anything faster in reality. Docsis 3.0 probably wont change this fact, and FIOS has the best hope. Look at Japans internet choices and thats where we will be in 10 years. It's part of my job to keep up with other competition, Time Warner is far behind compared to their closest competitors in internet service speed/price comparisons. My idea of a perfect internet service is FIOS 5/2 mbit for around 39.99 month and a backup WIMAX connection for when I'm on the road. Verizon is the only company that can do this. Anything more would be a waste of money and "theoretical" bandwidth. And my ping times should be very low and constant for games.

it's probly very safe to say that few of us will live to see a residential broadband package that's not only fast (50mb+), but also synchronous....

aside from that, i'm up in northern wyoming, in a small farming community...we got dsl here 3 years ago, starting with a 256kb synchronous line for $40 a month (:o)...they've since upgraded us, and service is 1mb/768k for the same price...users have the option to pay 20 bucks more a month to double speed (i'm not sure about upload, but download for sure)...and $10 a month extra will open all ports...they dont use any throttling or traffic shaping, either...seems weird to me, but i do like how relatively good the upload is here.

my dad's lives in denver and has CC...6meg/384kb...and he forks over $60 or so a month for that...

so to whoever said 10mb wasnt fast anymore, try living with 1mb and not having much faster available....

then again, a 100mb synchronous pipe would be nice

further detail

Could anyone elaborate the difference in upload/download speed and how it would help by increasing the pipe?

I understand it would be faster in some sense, I'm looking for a more technical explanation. Also, what seems to be the technology limiting factor by not allowing the upload speed to be increased?

wow

haha... those prices are ridiculous for the upload... i already have 10/1.5 available to me for 59.95
