| Doesn't suprise me
I'm actually suprised more ISPs haven't done this due to legal issues and low usage. Anyone who is not a major noob uses a pay news service that has better completion and retention than the ISP services. I bet more and more ISPs do away with usenet soon. Not that customers should be happy or anything it just doesn't shock me |

I am sure Rogers will discount the price of their service now since they don't need to provide Usenet anymore.

| Usenet dying; few use it; who cares
Rogers won't be the last to dump usenet. Very few users use it. Those who do can buy their own subscriptions. It is a cost that ISP's can avoid so that 97% of the users aren't paying extra for the 3% that do use it. -- -- Join Red Room Forum My Web Page |

Speaking of "noobs"... are you even aware that there is more to usenet than the binary groups and downloading files?
If you're using the old-fashioned text-based newsgroups (like me) there's no need for long retention and there are no issues with completion. I would be pissed off if I had to pay for access. -- The devil makes work for idle hands, but Stanford makes work for idle CPUs! |

But like one post said, will this stop a rate increase or lower current rates? If only 3% use it and yet all customers are paying for it, then where's the return for the customer? |

I was thinking the EXACT same thing. Somebody care to call Rogers and ask them what their lowered bill will be now that they done away with Usenet? |

It's always fun when companies try to pull that crap. Would their customers have had Usenet access (previously) through Rogers if they were not paying Rogers for it? Of course not. That alone proves that it was not a "free service." -- Rove / Rumsfeld 2008! |

they dont make a move like this unless they are actively looking for places to make cuts, and when they cant make cuts, then the rates go up. |

Usenet may or may not be dying, but it's been around for quite a while.
I, for one, still use it and will until it either gets really boring, lacks the content I need, or disappears off the internet completely. |

Yeah, they bought out dejanews a while back. It's OK, but the posts are not in real-time, they are greatly delayed. |

I would drop my ISP tommorow if they removed their usenet access. I don't care about long retention or amazing speeds but I do care to have it there when I need it.
Don't expect many ISP's to be doing the same thing, because once set up properly, usenet is relatively maintanance free. |

There are plenty of free services for pure text and many people use those groups, but lets not kid ourselves what most people use usenet for, and why Rogers probably pulled the plug. |

I'm shocked that those 3% of their users aren't here protesting over this (yet).
People should look closely at a lot of the freebies their ISP gives them that can be easily taken away. People complain that they only get 10mb of webspace, for example. At Earthlink, people complain about being throttled on Usenet after going over a known limit. Bitch enough and all the little added benefits can go *poof*. |

Well, I'm not in Rogers' land, but for those of you KNOW this will save them untold thousands every year not to host the servers or however they were providing this service. You should get some TANGIBLE benefit in return, like SPEED UPGRADES, more tiered packages, etc. Just saving the company money sucks, they should lower everyone's bill IMMEDIATELY by at least $5 a month! |

Microsoft already offers software that can be used to browse newsgroups: Outlook Express. It's not the software that's the issue, it's the connection to Usenet. The ISP is terminating their NNTP servers connections so the users will have to purchase a separate subscription (or use Google Groups). -- -Jason Levine My Gallery | Jason's Toolbox | PCQandA.com | URateit.com |
