| Only a matter of time With all of the costs, both for paying for newsgroups plus bandwidth, I can see other ISP's following suit. I was with OOL and they just went out and made their Usenet unusable due to speed restrictions. Now I am with verizon.
It is only a matter of time before other ISP's use the kiddy porn argument to get rid of Usenet and get some good PR with the average user and save money too.
The internet will become extremely eroded by all ISP's chopping away to save money and then coming up with PR related excuses as to why they have to do it.
A tenant in our office building recently go busted chasing after and talking dirty to a 14 year old girl. (Turned out to be a cop). From what I read about the case AOL has some pretty sleazy chat rooms where the name is very explicit about what goes on inside. There is an area where someone should do something.

| USENET Looks like USENET is finally on the radar! Under the ruse of kiddie porn i think its more pressure from the RIAA/MPAA and larger software companies. next thing you know the premium providers will start buckling under pressure from these entities and start filtering those 'popular groups' -- You can never be too rich, too thin or have too much Bandwidth | |

| Everything is Free!!! I like this answer to the FAQ question; "If you take away part of the service, shouldnt I get a discount?".
"There was no charge for this service. Rogers has introduced many new high-value services free for Rogers Yahoo customers. For example, RY Photos with unlimited storage, commercial-free Internet radio (Launchcast), a special Rogers Yahoo browser with premium features such as tabbed browsing, free premium personal web space and free blogs."
Of course, nothing is free when you get a bill each month.

| Services are shrinking, shouldn't your fees too? Rogers(TM) is axing usenet but continues to charge for it! Please note that Rogers advertised USENET as part of its services, along with e-mail and web access and provided support on how to set up USENET clients to access the service. USENET was a prerequisite for me and many others to signing up with Rogers.
Obviously, whoever composed their notice has absolutely no clue about the fundamental structural blocks of the internet but does have a very monopolistic single-minded way of doing things (read their suggestions for alternatives).
They are saying that axing USENET was due to the "constantly changing Internet technology" then they wisely suggest that, as an alternative to Usenet, customers could all sign up for yahoo messenger, read web logs and share photos. Anyone who is on Usenet realizes that this suggestion is a freaking insult.
Rogers "Communications" cut off one free (as in freedom) and fundamental communication medium in favor of proprietary, restricted and completely corporation-controlled services like Yahoo groups, Yahoo messenger and Yahoo photos.
Please be herded accordingly so we can target you better, no pun intended. Would it not be rosy to be one homogeneous, good little Yahoos. They do thank you for your loyalty though! (see quoted message)
Hell no, if Usenet goes, I go (along with my ~$250/month fees for cable/Internet/local phone/long-distance)

*Dear Valued Customer* *Please be advised that Rogers is discontinuing its Usenet service as of December 15, 2005.* Internet technology is constantly changing. Usenet was one of the earliest forms of user discussion on the Internet, but today has largely been replaced by blogs, instant messaging, personal web pages and other tools. As a result, fewer and fewer people are accessing Usenet. Therefore, Rogers has decided to stop providing Usenet service to Rogers Yahoo! customers. *Alternatives* To stay at the leading edge of new technology, we've introduced new and better ways to communicate; all available at no additional charge to Rogers Yahoo! customers: Instant messaging »ca.messenger.yahoo.com/ Groups »ca.groups.yahoo.com/ Personal web pages »ca.geocities.yahoo.com/ Blogs »360.yahoo.com/ Photos »ca.photos.yahoo.com/ Customers with a continuing desire to read or post Usenet text messages or who wish to access Usenet binary groups can subscribe to third-party Usenet service providers such as Giganews (our supplier up until the point when we discontinue Usenet) who offer a full Usenet service on a paid basis: »www.giganews.com/ Once again, thank you for your loyalty to Rogers and your continued business. *- Rogers Yahoo! Hi-Speed Internet* ==End of Rogers email notice==
