Inexpensive Verizon DSL?

But what if that customer wants to revert to inexpensive Verizon DSL?

The cheapest FIOS package is 34.95. DSL is around 29.99 for Verizons service. Who in their right mind would want to go back to "inexpensive Verizon DSL" and save $5? Cutting down on your $5 Starbucks Latte's every day will save you a lot more each month.

Please come up with a better argument next time.

Re: Inexpensive ???

As far as I know both FIOS and ADSL are unregulated services. So if there is no copper the customer is out of luck.

One can also assume as the market matures Verizon will get more aggressive on prices.

Copper 19th, Fiber 21st Century technology

There are a number of reasons why Verizon wants to retire Copper and replace it with Fiber. A single fiber drop to each residence can supply all services envisioned over the next several decades. The other important reason is operating expense (Opex). Fiber Opex is a small fraction of copper. A fiber network almost pays for itself on operational savings alone.

The last reason is more self-serving. The FCC ruled Telcos do not have to share new fiber with third parties. I leave it to the reader to appreciate the impact of this.

As others have posted backup power is an issue during an extended power outage. FIOS comes with a built in UPS. Those concerned with extended disaster communication can always install a secondary UPS, or in a pinch power the ONT from a 12v car battery.

From an aesthetic perspective I’d love to see utility pole clutter reduced: to power on top, and a small fiber distribution cable under that.

All in all I don't have a problem with Verizon’s transition to a pure fiber outside plant network. I commend them for being more forward-looking then the other Baby Bells.

FIOSTODAY

Actually

FIOS was installed last week at my place. Because we have both business and residential service they left the copper in place for the business lines and FIOS for the residential phone and internet.

Just make the request.....

When I got FIOS, they said I was not forced to ditch the copper. I had a choice to ditch copper permanently or keep the phone on the copper (and just internet on fiber).

When you get FIOS you DO have the choice to keep it. If the user isn't educated about the choices he/she has, then that's their fault.

Personally I had no problem letting go of the copper.

Copper not gone here

I had Fios installed. I asked about the Copper issue. The installer said that they were instructed to cut the copper right were it goes into the ground. So they dont' rip it out, just snip it low.

He then went on to say that they are not doing it. After working years on copper, none of the line men feel comfortable with cutting the copper because "you never know when you might need it". So he disconnected the copper pairs and wrapped them up in the old Network interface box.

Also I have 3 dial tone lines at my house. One for the household and the other two for home office stuff. The FIOS went on the HO stuff. The household line however remained on copper even after Fios was installed for the other two.

So that is one way to keep your copper options open. I guess I could even revert back to DSL on that line, but I can't imagine why. DSL was a desperate technology trying to squeeze every last bit of bw out of an aging copper plant. I rarely realized 1.5MB on my circuit and I can't believe that 30+ ADSL2/VDSL2 would ever really work well on it.

They Can Keep FIOS

....And Put the fiber(You know where). I saw the installations ,and they're really cheesey.I wouldn't mess my house up with this junk! There are also some serious reliability issues, because Verizons network crashes a lot, leaving you without a phone. Since FIOS won't get deployed in my area sooner than thirty years,I won't have to worry about it anytime soooooooooon!

Seriously,Like DSL, FIOS deployment is a joke!

Easy solution

Order data only. They will leave your copper there. Problem solved. Well, until Verizon forces everyone to switch to fiber.

This is not a new topic and it has been beat to death already.

With one exception that I know of....

If you have a DSL ISP separate from Verizon, and they have a contract with Verizon for Verizon to supply a connection for X years, Verizon will not pull the copper carrying that DSL circuit until the contract expires. Or so GWI informs me.

So just before you get a FIOS hookup, switch to some other DSL provider, if available. Keep paying Verizon DSL to keep your mail addresses functional. Let Verizon install FIOS. Then you can run dual WAN, or a lot of telephone circuits.

fios AGAIN?

I've known about this for almost a year now
and I'm almost positive its been posted here already
Why is Fios still popping up here
Sure it'd be great to have it but seriously what percentage of us are actually going to get serviced within the next 10 years if EVER? Not many in my head
The whole country is not as affluent or densely populated as New Jersey, New York, and parts of Texas
Pittsburgh has millions of people and as far as i know still without fios

So lets explore what BBR has covered on Fios..
They've dung through other companys lines to place theirs,
They will not hook you up with copper afterwards,
They have plans for 5/2 15/2 30/5,
They will/have start(ed) their own TV service
Verizon uses Hummers to promote it,

Now what ELSE can be SQUEEZED out of these topics?! For god sakes LET IT DIE ALREADY!

BZZZTT! Thanks for playing, Vanna, show are contestant their lovely departing gifts....

Fios deploymet in Pgh:
»FiOS in Pittsburgh, PA

Even if they did start in "Blue Devil" county. BOO HISS! Panthers still have Blue Devils for lunch!

VZ will eventually REPLACE 100% its ancient copper network.

Is it soon enough for ME? Not even close. I chase VZ crews all over the area watching them in my work travels for work daily. I see watch for new telco pedestals and huts etc.. Ready willing and able to deply the fiber from my end DITCH WITCH or better at the ready.

Does the Fios deployment/replacement have ulterior motives. Sadly YES, and its going to be Covad and similar ILEC's. As one poster pointed out I look for a FIRE SALE on a copper network to the some one who has some DEEP pockets IF any of the CLEC's are still around. Probably not. At least in the Tampa area VZ IS getting competing ISP's to offer services via fiber, some with better services, ie DHCP v. PPPOE, Static IP's etc..

If I though I would get Fios Data installed one second sooner I would be out there digging a trench with my HAND SHOVEL right now!

The cooper issue plays a part as I have ISDN lines and UNLESS/UNTILL Fios is available at the site(s) thats the only real choice those cooper wires are not going to be touched, and I have some S & W hardware to back that up.

One thing I am curious about with the PON network IF I say provide my own power to the ONT will the data wavelength continue assuming theres not a cut or the CO can no longer feed it. Strictly if I have power (regardless of how I provide it) to the ONT does the data stay on? Voice, video could care less won't be coming from them. DBS and I don't need voice services.

What leads you to say that? I am sure in places like mine with 200 houses per 10 sq miles they could not justify the costs of $2000 a house, although they are constantly repairing the lines around here it would make sense to do it strictly for maintenance costs alone. Honestly they probably wont/will not replace 70% or so of their territories, they want urban and suburban sprawls when they could be dominating the places with few to no broadband coverage

well regardless i doubt that there is any substantial development in Pittsburgh, i havent read anything to say otherwise. Just skimming over those posts i think i read maybe 1 street thats under development

..

So here is my question. What happens if you get FIOS, cancel, and want to use a different Company besides Verizon for your land phone line, what happens? Will company X just use the fiber Verizon already laid out to your home?

Unless they're leasing verizons fiber or have their own it sounds like you're stuck with Verizon either way.

Re: ..

Either said company will have to run their own lines, or you'll end up seeing a system like CLECs do right now (lease out copper lines)..

If you need ULTIMATE reliability really bad then you get a dish setup (unfortunately those are VERY laggy) -- but at least you'd be able to use it no matter how long the power was out, at the CO or whatever.. because the only way the satellite's signal would die is if the uplink facilities died or the satellite fell out of position. Heheh.....

Too bad for lag, otherwise that'd be such a nice alternative -- no "networks", no digging up the yards, as long as you had line of sight you'd be set with whatever company you could possibly want.

We need Clarification on this Copper Issue!

Verizon is putting FiOS into our community here in Palm Desert, Ca. and I went to one of their Roll-Out meetings. I asked Verizon about removing the copper and I was told they are not removing the copper. The only reason Verizon would remove the copper, which is not an easy task, is to get rid of obsolete equipment in the C.O. and to recoup the cost of the copper. When I asked this question to the Verizon Reps, they said the equipment in the C.O. would remain the same. There has to be some equipment that is different, but none the less, I don't think Verizon's Policy is to remove the copper.
