Well that user doesn't seem to know much about his equipment :P His DVR should be holding 80 hours of footage...not 30 unless everything is being recorded analog which obviously it shouldn't be analog at all.
All the Verizon box is, is a slightly changed 6412
Only other thing that would make sense for it to hold that little is if the digital tv is even higher bitrate then you would normally see, or if he is recording only HD content which of course takes up much more space

| Sounds almost identical to Comcast w DVR & VOD
The Verizon pkg sounds almost identical to my DVR / VOD pkg from Comcast. Even the DVR STB looks to be identical to my Motorola 6412. Will be nice when/if Verizon finally offers FIOS in my area. Comcast can use the competition. -- -- Join Red Room Forum My Web Page |

Notice the lack of smart card lot on the front right of the box, plus the outputs in the back are layed out a bit diffrently. It is definatly a modified 6412, does anyone know the exact model number? |

If the SD channels have less compression, then the 90hrs of SD could go down to 30Hrs, and the same w/ HD content. 120GB isn't that much room when you have low compression.
said by Motorola Website : An integrated 120 GB hard drive lets you record up to an estimated 90 hours of standard digital TV or 1220 hours of HDTV. You can maintain a personal library of your favorite programs to watch whenever it's convenient.

I wish Verizon was in my area.. I'm be all over this Fios.
I wonder if you can run your own personal email / webserver with Fios.. My guess is that it would be frowned upon.
Anyone know for sure? -- Who do you want to pay off today? |

| Congrats to VZ.
This is going to alter the markets for the cable companies, at least in the areas where they have to compete head to head. Maybe after SBC completes the purchases of AT&T they will start to finally deploy their own video services, along with the rest of the "advanced services", since they were supposed to have the ball rolling by now, but it seems to be on the shelf still.
But still, 20 HD channels is amazing, since Comcast does not have that many to offer. What is funny about HD on Comcast in my area is that they put the same channels on 2 or 3 times. HBO HD is on two separate channels, broadcasting the same thing on each channel. -- Health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die, and the world death rate holds at a steady 100.00% |

I know, but if they were not broadcasting FOX HD twice and all the premium channels two or three times then they could carry more HD on the same pipe. Perhaps they don't do it in your market, but in the KC area HBO in HD is broadcast on three different channels, and they all carry the same programming at the same time. -- Health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die, and the world death rate holds at a steady 100.00% |

1 edit | size of a boat?
quote: Craig: The DVR hard drive is about par for the size of the box, 30 hrs. Dish has the 80 hrs DVR but is the size of a boat.
Um....I have a Dish DVR dual tuner and it's not the size of a boat, and hold's 100 hours (minimum you need really, 30 hours is a joke...at least for me).

I have similar lineup already: »www.dishnetwork.com/content/prog···ex.shtml
In fact back, when Voom was a DBS provider too, I had around 40 HD channels and my full package with everything was $100 only. I really miss those Spring times... |

| Sounds a bit 'too enthusiastic'...
...especially when I read such idiotic FUD like this:
I4U: Anything that reminds you that it is not cable or satellite? Craig: I know that it is not satellite because it rained over the weekend and we all know what happens then.
Yes, we all know, Craig. Nothing happens then.
This 'rainy' and 'snowy' scaremongering is the good-ol' cable FUD - it's very interesting this guy suddenly soughs up the same marketing cvrap we hear from both sides all the time ("it's raining so you're screwed!" "even if it's average digital package, you're payi9ng twice as much on cable!" etc.)
I don't know... FiOS sounds awesome but this "user interview" smells fishy to me. |
