| Why even bother? From what I've read so far it seems that some of you have unhealthy relationship with your televisions. I gave up on OTA and almost all of cable television long ago. It's pretty much all crap nowadays, the truth is nothing on OTA TV will ever capture my time again and cable companies forcing me to pay for s*it channels I don't and will not watch is also BS, so I won't pay through the nose just for a channel or two. My solution which has worked for me through the last 5-6 years is turning off the idiot box. There are more important things than the brainwashing fiction on TV. If you want to kill time watching TV, fine, just suggesting that you try to change the routine to see what else exists outside of network programming. | |

| Content controlled pricing: Microsoft DVR The problem with watching or not watching ads are the assumptions that are made in presenting them to you.
It is a given that the network makes money by selling the time to the advertiser. The advertiser ASSUMES that placing the ad in front of X many eyeballs = revenue (profit) when such may not be the case. The network on the other hand has no idea if the ads are making money for the adertiser or not. What they do know is that the ads are as annoying as hell, and now they can make even more money by not showing them. I do remember that when cable was new, one of its biggest selling points was "no commercials." By the time I got really interested in it, it had as many commercials as broadcast television.
I think network and non-network are both shooting themselves in the foot pushing all these ads, and people may come to realize that television, as a medium leaves a lot to be desired. There are, perhaps other things one can do with their time in the evenings. One does not have to stayed glued to the boob-tube every night...

| Come on now! You know, I would not have a problem with this kind of stuff if I wasn't already paying $120 a month to Directv!
They get you coming and going!
They are actually charging you to watch their commercials!
_IF_ they want to pay for my entire Directv subscription, I will sit through whatever commercial they want me to. But as long as I pay for my service, they can bite me!
Paying for your service, and then making you to pay more to not sit through the commercials?
Commercials should be banned on ALL premium access cable/sat. services. I pay for this &%$# already! You can take your commercials and %$#@ $%$# $$#$%#$#!!!!!
OTA network TV is free because it's subsidized by commercials, yes? Well then why in the hell do we PAY to watch commercials and then PAY MORE NOT TO WATCH THEM??????
Fine, pay to skip commercials on free channels or free OTA TV. But charge me to not watch commercials on a premium service that I already pay for? I don't FN think so! -- Never argue with a fool, people might not know the difference.

| This won't end well Commercials are better than the majority of the tripe that they pass off as television programming. Actors need a pay cut, reality tv needs to die off and cable companies can go jump off a bridge if they think people will pay more because they skipped commercials.
They are the ones who pushed DVR technology and advertised the ability to skip commercials.. now do they expect people not to use the most visible feature? Hell, most cable companies encourage people to download music and movies in their ads on tv. They won't see the end of this, they need the consumer, the consumer doesn't need them. A priority shift is in order.

| A peek into the future.... "Dear Valued Media Customer,
Our standard weekly audit of your credit card invoices show that you have not fulfilled your contractual obligation of purchasing 25% of the products advertised to you during the previous week. We are exercising our rights as per Article 197, Section 37-M, Paragraph XVII of the Media Consumer Responsibility Contract you agreed to when signing up for our service. The following sanctions will be applied against you:
- All future viewings of "CSI: Walla-Walla, Washington" will be automatically edited to replace the final court verdict with a musical number consisting of a commercial jingle - The sixteen pornographic channels you currently subscribe to will be replaced with a looping image of your third-grade teacher shaking her finger at you and saying "No, no, no!" - Your TiVo will be reprogrammed to randomly shift scheduled recordings, and will record at least three Lifetime-channel specials each week
These sanctions will remain in place until our audits show you have fulfilled your contractual obligations. Remember, advertising dollars pay for your programming, so not purchasing advertised merchandise makes you a thief.
Thank you, Your Friendly Media Conglomerate" -- "We're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad." "How do you know I'm mad?" "You must be, or you wouldn't have come here."

| Damn what a great Idea The other dvr providers are probably kicking themselves in the ass right now. I bet microsoft patented a system that charges a customer a fee for skipping past or fast forwarding through commercials. That would put them in position to be the only dvr company with the ability to skip past commercials. There is no way in hell tv networks won't demand this. Microsoft is just ahead of the game which shows they are more on top of things than the others. | |

1 edit | We Are Now In Control Of YOU
"There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image; make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur, or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all you see and hear. We repeat: There is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to ... the Outer Limits of Forced Advertising."
