Well FIOS is bringing a very fast internet connection. But it is obvious that their prices for cable TV tiers are no better or worse than cable or satellite TV. Not surprising, because those rates are determined more by the content providers than by the companies delivering that content.

Really? I thought their prices were pretty good. 160 all-digital channels for under $40? I can't get that with Adelphia, that's for sure! |

Prices of cable TV? FIOS "La Connexion" 115 Channel Digital Package: $32.95. Comcast Analog package of about 70 channels: 45-50. I could have digital cable with HD for the price of analog with comcast.

Which goes to show you once again that it's greed, not what the customer wants driving the change.
This is FIOS. There is now officially ZERO technical reason they could not sell you a single channel at a time. ZERO reason at all. It's digital, it's not even SENT over the wire unless it's ordered. There's no chance of 'theft of service', etc. So what's their justification for forcing someone who wants to see the Discovery Channel having to buy ESPN2? Greed, plain and simple.
Though I generally despise the government, I would love to see the companies put in front of the nation, and be forced to defend their practices. They no longer have any technical reason to say they can't provide ala-carte pricing/packaging. They are providing 15 channels for 12.95. Why can't I choose the 15 channels I want for 15.95? Really, even with 160+ channels, there have been tons of studies that show people only watch 15-20 channels. The only reason they bundle them all is simply greed.

Dishnetworks top 180 $52.99 with locals where available. 180 channels
Directv $51.99 with locals where available. 155 channels
Comcast $58.91 with locals where available. 150 channels
Those are the big 3 and It looks like Verizon is actually a bit under the norm.
Fios Digital Service $39.95 172 - 195 channels depending on area.
That is a a little under the normal cable prices. And that is a good thing in my book. Fios has about 200 channels and all costs you $77 not to bad comcast option has me at over 120 for that same package. Not a bad savings in my book.

I just did a quick comparison with my cable TV bill and it would cost $102.75 to have pretty much the same channels and packages and set top boxes as what I am paying Comcast $122.92 for. Fairly close considering Verizon is just rolling out this service and hasn't yet gotten into the twice a year increases that cable companies are used to doing.

I'll disagree with your assessment. Their tv packages seem to be a less expensive than cable and satellite.
Fios Expanded basic- 39.95
DTV- Total Choice - 41.99
DISH- Top 60 - 31.99 - lineup sucks
Cable in Keller seems to be provided by Charter- BIG VALUE PACK - 52.99 |

It is always present. The PPV is like IPTV and on demand.

Yes, it IS IPTV all the way (IGMP to be specific). There's no 'analog' signal on fiber. Video on Demand is RTSP or some proprietary cisco crap. In fact, if you want analog, they have to install a DAC converter in your house. FIOS TV is a multicast IGMP signal, and the headend box is configured to decode the appropriate signals to display on your TV, depending on your group membership. Channel selection is ALL configured at the central site, which broadcasts the keys for your personal box so you can decode a channel. Again, ZERO technical reason you can't belong to a single channel group.

It's called CATV HFC Emulation. They use a wavelength of fiber and dedicate it to the TV section, and from there simply transform it from Fiber to Coax.

Any respectable cable co in 2005 uses fiber in some part of their backhaul, all verizon is doing is bringing that backhaul to your doorstep  |

You can get Time Warner Cable to offer you their digital package plus HBO for $39.95, and they'll give you this price for a year, then put you back on regular rates.
Is that what Verizon is going to do? Get people to switch over to FIOS TV, put the 12 months in small print, and show everyone the real price in a year? |

Yeah, but look at the channel lineup. I can't think of a single channel they don't have, not even one. They have tons of channels that neither cable or sat have, AND it's cheaper. |

Historically, most of the video distributed by CableCos and others over fiber has been as QAM MPTS's over 6 MHz analog channels, just because it is the much ballyhooed, mythical elixir called "fiber", does NOT mean it is by default "digital".
It has been only relatively recently that video SPTS's have started to be distributed as IP over a switched data network (usually GigE fiber).

Still the "Analog" portion is about 20 channels.. anything more and you require a STB.
