Still capped?

Future competition for FIOS will be welcome but will Cox like Comcrap continue it's anti-consumer policies of low monthly caps with this new service?

The people in those other areas....

need to get on the horn to whomever can "put a foot up Cox's rear" so they can get the same level of service..Nuff said..

Good idea, but...

It looks like Cox is going to have to switch a bunch of modems... A lot of their older DOCSIS modems (ie - the one I got when I had them two years ago) came with only 10Mbps ethernet ports...

There is no reason to believe otherwise... Its just the way that Cox operates.

Re: Good idea, but...

And many customers are going to have to buy new routers, assuming Cox doesn't give them one.

As seen after FIOS was installed, most of the cheap home office routers on the market weren't able to handle the 15Mbps speeds.

Re: Still capped?

That actually is a good point. Maybe some of our BBR researches could find that out for us. Maybe Verizon FIOS looks a lot better because of this.

How do you know FIOS isn't capped either?

So they have to buy one. What's the big deal? My old BNC hubs don't work with the RJ-45 connectors on my cable modem but I am not expecting Comcast to give me new equipment just for that reason.

In most cases, I beleive the problems either were that the WAN port on the router was 10mbit, or the processor in the router wasn't designed to handle PPPoE encapsulation at 15mbits. A 15mbit connection without the extra PPPoE doesn't take a considerable amount of horsepower to route/NAT it.

Re: Still capped?

I live in Fairfax City and I've had Cox for 2 1/2 years and I've never gotten a notice I was over my quota. According to my bandwidth meter (and so not even counting whatever my roommate does), I average about 100 gigs down and 40 up per month, and sometimes a lot more if I download a lot of DVD-R's.

Hope their upgrade investment can handle it....

It's safe to say this tier will be popular and this really pushes the DOCSIS 2.0 spec. Although if they can lock their users to basically browsing and establish limits to prevent users from heavy downloading, its got a chance.

And yes, some user-end hardware changes will be needed. Comcast found several modems from different makers that couldn't make it to 6Mbps.

Re: Good idea, but...

It wouldn't bother me to have to buy new hardware, if I was given 15Mbps speeds, but some people will complain; I can hear them already.

We are not capped in their Hampton Roads (southeastern Virginia) market to my knowledge. Well, not yet anyway.

Re: Hope their upgrade investment can handle it....

DOCSIS 2.0 only offers upstream enhancements, but I believe the current downstream maximum is almost 38Mb/sec. On the upstream side they can add return channels, increase modulation, split nodes, or a combination of the three so I don't see that being much of an issue.

Have you seen anyone talk about hitting their cap? Do you see anything suggesting there is?

Why would Verizon cap their service now when they're trying to generate good PR?

Most couldn't handle the speed because of PPPoE authentication (as far as I've read). Since Cox uses straight DHCP, there shouldn't be a problem as long as the router has a 100baseT WAN interface.
