Qwest

Qwest has had this for years, its called qwest.net basic, It is a Ip address and a connection for 9.95. It does have tech support for the connection but other than that you are on your own. I have it at 2 locations.

My fav part...

Including a regular FlexNet account along with an ADSL account means you can still login to the Internet with a modem even if you are away from your ADSL link (e.g. at a friend's house, or with a laptop on a neighbor island), or when your ADSL link goes down as it will (yes, you heard that right. Without warning too.)
I think thats f'kn hillarious. These guys rule.

Would a cheaper price be cost possible?

The article asks: "How about $18-$25 for a 3Mbps DSL or cable connection, with no e-mail and no support?"

This might well be attractive, but would the cost savings to the provider be worth it? As has been pointed out, much of the "fluff" that ISPs provide (mail, parental controls, entertainment news, DNS, etc.) are available for free or close to that elsewhere, meaning that these things are cheap to provide in bulk.

So, if you get rid of all this "fluff", the ISP saves MAYBE $5/month--probably less--more like $2/month. How in the world does that get you to a price point of $18-$25 for 3Mbps?

(This is also why Detroit doesn't build stripped down versions of large cars--the people who are really interested in such minor cost savings aren't buying the product capable of handling large volumes--they're driving econo-boxes, the equivalent of dial-up.)

There was a Hawaiian DSL provider whose name escapes me at the moment
Now that's what I call impressive investigating reporting

Correct me if I read the following wrong...

I don't even need to use your DNS servers, and frankly, with Comcast and Telstra's recent troubles, I might be better off.
but am I to understand that there are ISPs so control-freak-y as to force users to use their provided DNS servers? If Mediacom tried that with me two months ago (when their AT&T owned servers would work _maybe_ 10% of the time), I would have dropped them like a bad habit.
