Just like with yahoo launch... Yahoo is notorious for using IE specific code, there has even been a time when it did work for other browsers (like opera) but then yahoo seem to change the site as if it were BLOCKING other browsers purposely.

I think they do this because of their yahoo toolbar and other IE browser malware/junk/crapware.

already sucks

Tried to subscribe with Opera and got the message that I have been locked out of my account for using too many different credit cards !!!!! (didn't even got to that section yet !!) so far, I think this is a bad start !

$5 per month PLUS....

additional $.79 for each song if you want the "permanent" download so you can burn a CD, etc. Not a great deal. I can pay $5 per month and have streaming music on my computer here at work, or turn on the radio and have it free. Hmm.... how to choose?

Cd ripping

Looking through the settings, they seem to have done something right. Not only does it support mp3, but it does aac, flac, and ogg.

They just don't get it.

If it's infected with that DRM crap, then I don't want it.

I hate DRM as much as you, but how are you supposed to have a subscription based service w/o DRM?

Actually, DRM annoys me when I buy a file and it's infected with DRM. It's mine, damnit, I'll do what I will with it. Subscription DRM would not bug me as much, since I know from the outset I am only renting it.

Yeah- with anything but IE, I got a "Cannot launch video from your area" error- what the hell does my "area" have to do with launching a video?!?

Still not going to buy into it.

First I don't like WMA. Second they are using DRM on files that I would be paying for. I buy music now online, legally and it comes in 192 MP3 and no DRM. I can play it on both of my players, put it on my flash drive for easy transport to my machine at work. Store it at Gmail, burn it to CD if I want.
If I don't have the same abilities with the file that I would with the music on the CD, I'm not buying.
Oh, and I haven't bought anything from anyone on this list »www.riaa.com/about/members/default.asp for two years, and until they stop suing their customers I'm not going to.

Stupid Yahoo

I won't even consider their services until something starts working with FireFox (or any other browser I might want to use). I've been a fan of Launch for a long time (before Yahoo even owned it, back when it was musicvideos.com). But since it doesn't work with FireFox, I haven't been inclined to go there for a very long time. If I'm not going to use their free stuff because it's an inconvenience, you can be damn sure I'm not going to pay them for it.

Yahoo with Musicmatch?

I subscribe to musicmatch and noticed on the Musicmatch homepage the logo in the upper right has the yahoo music logo on it. So is this music player from yahoo basically musicmatch with a new wrapper?

How are they doing this?!?

I mean the labels pushed Apple so hard with demands that iTunes is nearly unprofitable at .99c per track @ 128Kbps. What kind of slack did the labels cut with Yahoo to offer this at $4.99mo unlimited?

It's all about fidelity there. While FM and AM radio are free the frequency response and signal to noise ratio is nowhere near that of a decent streaming audio service. Radio music is compressed and limited much more compared to the actual CD (or vinyl record even). A decent ear for music can tell the different right away. If Yahoo is streaming at 192k it sounds to be the audio quality will definitely be better.

$5 a month for a better listening experience or practically non-dynamic compressed music for free? That's where the real decision will be.

As for $.79 downloads at 192k that's getting closer to what I feel would be a fair trade off. $.75 is what I would consider a fair "list" price and $.50 would be the good deal.

Re: How are they doing this?!?

Good question. Maybe now that iTunes has tested the waters and proven there is a market for paid downloads (in spite of the label's greed on royalties and licensing) they are offering better rates for Yahoo. Or maybe Yahoo is operating at a loss and making it up on something related like ads or value added service.

Who cares?

Oh right, the idiots that bought an iPod care

If you want it to work on the iPod, tell Jobs to stop being a dick.

Re: How are they doing this?!?

Or maybe it is because the $4.99 a month does not include the rights to burn to a CD and the music expires when your subscription does.

music

i don't know about alot of you but i use winamp, have used it for many years and will continur to use it and well there is live stream radio feed on there and yes ppl there is even some 256 bitrate feeds too and that is free. my sister has an ipod and when she visits she loads her music off my pc onto her ipod. FREE

edit: lets just hope that yahoo treats the music library with alot more care and security than the chat side of yahoo cuz god knows that is the most insecure thing that has ever been released. it will be less than a month and someone will have cracked a backdoor into the library and that is gonna be sooooo funny.
