end users still wont know what open source is, just that they have a different browser. the average joe doesn't care!

Count method ??

How do they count downloads ?? Do I count as "1" or "2" downloads if I download FF at home and at work ?? Of course, they count "2", but "users" is more meaningful.

Also, I download v1.0 twice (home and work), v1.01 twice, v1.02 twice, and v1.0.3 twice. They're counting that as "8"... Again, "users" has more value, IMO. What they need to do is register in some manner, of course many paranoid people will not do this for some unknown fear.

Re: not quite

half of those downloads are probably from re-installs, upgrading, patching.. and those fake clicks. doubt they're unique.

Not too shabby for open source

even if 50,000,000 downloads doesn't = 50,000,000 users its still impressive

When was the last time the counter was reset?
Do they take into account the amount of re-downloads, upgrades, patches...ect?

Re: not quite

Yeah, if they count every time they put a new update a download. Count about 20 from me.

Now that they are "mainstream" we will see more individuals trying to take advantage of the exploits.

Yawn...more whoring of FF

Count me in on that list of those who after hearing of new features downloaded, installed, tried it, was hardly impressed and ultimately uninstalled it...more than once. I also wonder if they are counting all of those times they find bugs and vulnerabilities and rather than simply releasing a patch you have to download and install a full edition again...and again...and again....and again...for every desktop you run that fadware on.

FF is WAY overrated, in no small way because sites like DSLR whore it 24-7 as being the Next Coming when FF isn't even breathing hard yet.

Now I'm sure all the FF fanboys will jumping for joy at this non-news item. The rest of us will simply yawn and move on to the next non-news item. Perhaps another article about FIOS installers (or not, depending on if the Ed actually bothers to read the news article before running to post it) cutting another water pipe.

True, but how many people have installed it on other people's PC's from a CD or other removeable device? I have installed it on several friends' PC's from a flash drive.

Far fewer than those who have had to download it time and time again to address FF software updates.

When I read it I was thinking the same thing... Of course the next thought was how that person would make a perfect politician.

He certainly said a lot of words but really didn't say a lot content-wise.

One issue with this

I am glad to see that so many people are using a great browser but the numbers are inflated. I have downloaded firefox 20-30 times just this year. I ussually pull the nightly builds every few days to see what is new. Plus they have had multiple releases which my guess would be 5 or more this year.
Now to me this means at most 10million people might be using firefox.

Big time! The damn thing still doesn't work right, and shutsdown 10x as often as IE. I hardly use it anymore...

Re: Count method ??

People dont want to register because it is a pain in the ass to do on every website and, frankly, many sites ask for info that is none of their business. Point here is that, if there have been 50 million downloads, likely 10 million or so are unique, which is still a good penetration.
