| Interesting Yeah, i hate being capped, it sucks when your capped less than 1/5 of advertised upload speed. I mean, isn't it the internet? The exchange of information is meant to be both ways, yet apparently upload is "evil". In my situation at the least i find the caps to be my priority I'm not whining because upload speed is so low(which it is) but because I'm not getting what I'm paying for, as a human being don't i have a right to be discontent when i'm practically throwing money out the window for a service i'm not getting? While the world is moving ahead in broadband, America has barely changed. And I dont understand why people would talk about availability. From looking at this top ten list i've noticed these are problems faced by broadband customers not people in general so if your a broadband customer you shouldnt care about availability when its already available :/ | |

| Agreed Although I have never had a problem yet with caps. I am going to have too agree. With online radio and even TV now becoming more popular, caps is going to become a very large problem. As one user was quoted as saying... "The future of The Internet is not just e-mail, text messaging, and normal web surfing. But rather high speed media." | Usage Surcharges Benefit Most Customers If some people work for 40 hours, and other people work for 2 hours, and the people are all paid the same -- then the suckers who worked the 40 hours are subsidizing those who only worked 8 hours.
Same deal with DSL.
If Bob, Joe and Jane use 1GByte per month, and Terry uses 100GB per month -- and they all pay the same -- then Bob, Joe and Jane are subsidizing Terry.
And that is what useage surcharges are really about -- making those who use 25 - 100 times as much network capacity as the average user -- pay their own way.
Paying for what you use is fair.
Lobbying ISPs to get them to force other customers to subsidize your high use is unfair.
Even with DSL, after the lines are consolidated together (at the DSLAM cabinet or the telephone company office) a customer unexpectedly using 50 times the bandwidth of a normal customer will disrupt service to other customers in the sharing the service.
If the high-use customer makes their requirements known at the time of arranging installation -- then the extra capacity can be planned for and provided. The equipment can be re-configured, an extra router brought in, or an additional fiber brought into use, so the high volume customer doesn't hurt service to other customers.
And most high-use customers do this, do make their requirements known before hand, and do pay the extra cost of a higher volume service.
On the other hand, if an ISP were to cut off service without fair warning (meaning a few phone calls over a few days) because of excessive bandwidth use -- that would be an unfair intentional disruption of service -- possibly a malicious disruption of service.
Charging a bit extra for high-use customers is fair.

| comcast rhapsody. bs to me Ya'll are totally forgetting here now. Doesnt Comcast have Comcast Rhapsody? If so thats where they make their money from users using Comcast Rhapsody. A source for downloading songs legally. So in turn i guess why comcast let their damn list out to the RIAA is due to them being jealous of no-one using their damn piece of crap Rhapsody for music downloads. Fricken fools if ya ask me they screwed themselfs. | |
