 Silly backward countries

Kazakhstan's government telecom monopoly is equally cumbersome and stifling of telecommunications improvement. These backward governments need to get a clue.

Problem is that this is a source of government income for many countries. These aren't simply the "phone company" but government agencies.

TelMex is owned by a corrupt Mexican Mafioso. Look him up on forbes as one of the richest people in the world.

Vonage should let the VoIP run over port 80 for the connection set up, make it appear like HTTP traffic. Silly that this happens, but the VoIP business is going to have to get a bit creative, (now if a law is passed then there is not much that can be done legally).

Vonage Forums

After reading this story, I went to go check out the Vonage forum thread about this Mexican VOIP issue...So I'm reading the rational replies from the Mexicans looking for help, and then stumble upon this "gem" of a response, FROM A 5-STAR VONAGE FORUM MEMBER:

quote:

not baiting you with this question, I'm genuinely interested to know...why would an American want to retire to Mexico? Is it a lot cheaper to live there? And how are Americans treated there? I assumed Mexico was dirty and corrupt and generally unsafe, or else millions of Mexicans wouldn't be streaming across the desert every year to get here. What's the attraction for an American to want to live in Mexico?"

end quote.

Perhaps I am thin skinned, but does anyone else think this is just flat out wrong? I am absolutely appalled and amazed that the Vonage forum admins let this post remain on the board.

ksmith501,

IMHO it was a legitimate question from someone that is genuinely interested in why an American would want to live in Mexico...

On the original topic - I can see people flocking to the sat providers if these countries keep this up...

Re: Silly backward countries

just to let everyone know, the problem with telmex customers is that their outbound audio to the people they call or the people that call them is extremely choppy, no matter which port the RTP packets are being sent across. the rtp packets appear to be deprioritized by Telmex, not outright blocked. telmex customers (as of now, at least) are still able to make and recieve calls, the quality is just awful. it was fine up until a few weeks ago, at least according to customer statements.

so, the "I assumed Mexico was dirty and corrupt and generally unsafe, or else millions of Mexicans wouldn't be streaming across the desert every year to get here" part is excused because he is "genuinely interested"? sheesh what a world we live in.

How about we rephrase? If Mexico is nice enough that someone with wealth would want to retire there, why are people leaving in droves?

ksmith501,

You are correct, maybe he should check his facts - he might have exagerated a little by saying "millions". But by merely stating what his assumptions are should not be cause for alarm...

I concur. Borat really needs to get on that issue.

No, that number is not exaggerated at all. There are nearly 3 million illegal immigrants from Mexico as of 1996, 54 percent of all illegal immigrants.

Not so easily done. HTTP traffic, yes its port 80, but TCP port 80 while the protocols used for VoIP are UDP. Although UDP uses port numbers as well, the protocol is very different and is easily distinguishable from http port 80 traffic.

In my country there is problem, and that problem is the Jew....

Throw the Jew down the well! So my country can be free!
Apparently, it's the Jews causing these problems.

I have a good feeling someone's going to take that the wrong way.

I dont know, but being wealthy probably can make most places nicer, just like being poor can make them worse.
