Voluntary tax? Yeah right. |

Another money hungry state trying to milk the cash cow. I don't understand how this would be "voluntary" though. I don't think it will ever go through, as surely no one would voluntarily pay this. |

Won't work. The only way that it 'could' work is if the business was based out of that state, and what business in their right mind would want to. |

BBR left out a rather important bit of info in their headline:
Gov. Jim Doyle wants you to pay Wisconsin's 5% sales tax whenever you pay to download a song, book, movie or piece of art.
Notice the "pay to download" part? Changes the tone a bit, eh?
Still a retarded law though... |

First few years it is "voluntary" meaning you put on your tax form what you think you spent and then pay the state. 5 years later it is not so voluntary....and you are tracked, fined and jailed.
I despise the phony "its voluntary, or its non-invasive" arguments.
If you are going to tax or ban something just do it. Don't play word games. That just insults me. |

So that means I don't have to pay it even if I lived in Wisconsin. So well if it's optional, i'll never pay. But then again, why the hell are they taxing stupid things like this on the internet? Stupid law makers... Tax Beer! |

Ooops. Posted wrong. Anyway...it's still silly whether it says "pay" or not.
Piece of what? Haha! I'm going...I'm going...

Maybe I'm missing something but how is Wisconsin going to justify this cost? They don't own the internet or pay to keep it up or anything. Unless I'm missing something, I don't understand how you could tax downloads. It's a private service and not state run or owned... -- CCNA Training in Progress - Webmaster of WRT54G.com |

a closer analogy is when the tax preparer asks "did you buy anything off the internet that you didn't pay sales tax on?" or "any undeclared gambling earnings?"
but either way, it won't work, just like the other voluntary taxes |

I don't know if they have sales tax in Wisconsin, but if they do, they don't own the store, pay rent, or pay wages...same concept. They're just looking for MORE money instead of looking at controlling spending on stupid programs a few get the benefit of. Taxes just frustrate me! |

You are misguided. File a return of $0 and see how long it is before you end up being fined and/or even jailed. You may get away with it for a while, but eventually Uncle Sam WILL come knocking and they won't use lubercation.
I don't agree with the entire tax system, but there is a need for it. Try going a day or even 1/2 a day without utilizing something that your tax dollars don't help provide in one way or another.
Taxing user's for these downloads is silly. Is this an RIAA and MPAA subsidy tax or is this something to actually improve the well being of the people? It would not suprise me if something like this starts up. Just like some states (California for example) that are attempting to force resellers to collect and pay taxes to them if they sell goods to their residents even if the business has no physical presence there. They do this because virtually all states put that obligation on the buyer of the state. Obviously this is voluntary and not paid so they want to force us to do it for them. |

So if you get audited what will they look at? Your browser History and cache?
The term "voluntary" as applied to taxes means that you declare what your liability is, as opposed to being sent a bill. It does not mean it's up to you whether or not you want to comply with the tax code.
Technically you're supposed to pay Sales & Use tax on items you bring into the state tax-free. They almost never go after individuals, but they will audit businesses. (at least here in Virginia) |

I don't pay tax on downloads. I pay taxes on everything else though.:(
Do you mean it will make downloads of copyright material legal? That's the last court ruling on the subject in Canada (uploads are illegal) but I doubt that this would happen. |
