I've not had any problems with my Vonage service in quite some time now. Been up all week.
This only going on for certain devices? Or parts of the network? |

I don't know if Ma Bell had upgrades with such ease when she first started either. |

| VOIP needs to stop begging to be regulated
Its this kind of BS that is going to cause the American public to do what it does best when something doesn't work the way it should... whine to the government!
If VOIP providers don't get their act together, the government will end up regulating them to death. -- Hey Fast Eddie... you're next! |

| This is why I canceled Vonage
I orignally signed up for Vonage a few years ago and the service was great. Then they started the advertising blitz and apparently grew too fast.
The outtages, failed connects and poor response from Vonage TS were just part of their problems. Their so-called 9-1-1 connecting to receptionist phones of the local sheriff only manned during daylight hours which the rest of the time would comically say, "Our offices are closed, if this is an emergency or you need to report a crime in progress, hang up and dial 9-1-1" and the then fresh addition of per number junk fees made the service not the deal I had signed up for.
Hopefully people will vote with their feet and switch providers. Only when people flee to competitors like Broadvoice (which I've had nearly zero trouble with and 1/2 the cost) will Vonage straighten up it's act.
Of course there will be the Vonage fanboys who will defend their high price and contant outtages to the death...but unlike most services...there are a zillion competitors who are only a phone call away...but then you just have to wait for Vonage to fix it for ya. -- Don't get it, demand it! I remember a long time ago when AT&T did a software upgrade and shut down more than half of the countries long distance, and some local calling capabilities. Things happen, even with the Bells. I never noticed it here in the 847 area code, but could have been down. My syslog server shows there was network traffic between the ATA and Vonage during the outage time. The only question I have to ask is, why not do these things at 3:00am? Dan |

| Can't complain...
We had Vonage problems yesterday. It ticked my wife to no end. However, we also had cable problems yesterday. (Cable TV was going on and off.) After reading this thread, I'm sure part of our problems were due to Vonage but most were due to the cable company. Our problems persisted all day long until I finally went upstairs and power cycled the cable modem, router and VOIP adapter. Before I did that, I noticed that the cable modem kept rebooting and the router would reboot every time the cable modem rebooted. Very odd behavior.
Regardless, I pay $27/month for Vonage (including taxes/fees). I get unlimited long distance and so many features I don't even use them all. Even with SBC's best deal, I still pay less than half for Vonage. I certainly don't get HALF the service. I get 99% of the service. This is nothing short of a fantastic deal.
Granted -- VOIP is not for everyone. Based on yesterday's issues, the typical VOIP customer would have called, complained and threatened to cancel. I realized my cable had problems and I know that my phone service will never be more reliable than my HSI connection.
I've only had to call Vonage three times in the more than two years I've been with them. Once for 911 transfer problems. Once for number portability problems and once because the primary port on my ATA-186 crapped out. (Still worked but it wouldn't ring any phones. I think a storm got it.)
All other issues were tied directly to my HSI connection or Vonage issues of which they told me about on their web site. In total, there have probably been half a dozen "situations" like this over the past two years. Even with these issues, I can't believe I pay this little for phone service. |

That's the whole reason I keep my vonage, internation calls are much cheaper on vonage that on any cell phone. Go check the vonage website on Internation rates and show me a Cell provider website with rates that can beat it. |

You're right, you will get killed if you direct-dial an international call on a cell phone. However, I use phone cards to make international calls with my cell phone. Works like a charm, cheap as heck. If I don't like one card I can always use another from a different company.
I just don't think its worth paying $20-$40 extra per month just for the privilege of paying a few cents or less on international calls when I can just pay a few cents or less without the upfront cost of another line. -- Hey Fast Eddie... you're next! |

| why i have vonage!
One member asked why have Vonage if you have a cell phone...
Short answer for me, I am a police officer, and my department has a policy that maintains i have a home phone. So, instead of paying 40.00 a month to BellSouth, I pay 17 a month to Vonage.
I still use my cell for everything, but I at least fall in line with my policy with Vonage! |

$40.00 a month for a landline? Jeeze, I pay $20.00 for my SBC hard line(including call forwarding@$3.95-which I use to forward calls to my cell fone). After the earthquake we had here in SLO county in December '93, I found out how good having the "5 9's" was. My cell phone became useless due to overload, HSI became erratic in operation, but the olde hard line worked!
Sorry, Vonage-you're only as good as an HSI..and when HSI get's to the "5 9's" in up time, then maybe I'll switch.
P.S. I have no long distance w/SBC-just local area code only. Thats what the cell phone's for. International long distance? Thats what calling cards are for. But, this is what works for me...
