| I have a PANIX account for my main EMail addy. PANIX has already set up a work around and it is working. I am so glad that I have a secondary account that sort of provided a bridge until I got the work around. What is surprising is that PANIX admits that it would take sometime for a resolution and hence does not give an estimated time.

| Scary thing
Scary thing is I knew stuff like this would eventually start happening. Now most cynics will say if they can't keep their dns entries secure , then maybe they should hand them over to UN control.
If this problem is just starting to peak it's ugly head , it's do to grow soon. This is one of the new things that they are trying to do to drive traffic to other sites, where some one cashes in. -- "It's always funny until someone gets hurt......and then it's absolutely friggin' hysterical!" |

The Panix work around doesn't appear to be working from here doing WWW. Perhaps it only works on their own domain (they control their own DNSs so that wouldn't be hard). |

| It is the internet.
It is the internet.
It is poorly controlled, poorly regulated, and poorly policed.
The registrar refuses to make changes on the weekend. What if this had been the US Thanksgiving Weekend -- 4 days?
If a registrar won't fix mistakes on the weekend, the registrar should be banned from making new changes in the 12 hours before the weekend (only corrections would be allowed during that period). -- (Virus&Hijacking FAQ + Submit suspected malware + Backups FAQ + Security FAQ TOC) |

| Lock the Domain
Shows how critical it is to LOCK YOUR DOMAINS. The email address associated with my domains gets hundreds of spam messages a day, and I can easily see how a transfer notice would get lost. I've REGISTRAR-LOCKed everything and rest a little easier now. |

Please stop beating the dead "domain" locking horse. Regardless if it is locked or not, they could probably have found away around it, if it was not already locked. |

| On the road to recovery
This was just posted to NANOG about an hour ago, from their shell's MOTD:
. Hijack recovery underway (elr) Sun Jan 16 17:43:28 2005 . . Recovery is underway from the panix.com domain hijack. . . The root name servers now have the correct information, as does the . WHOIS registry. Portions of the Internet will still not be able to . see panix.com until their name servers expire the false data. More . info soon. . . panix.net status update (elr) Sun Jan 16 16:06:41 2005 . . As some of our customers have noticed, there have been a few problems . with using panix.net as a substitute for panix.com. We've fixed most . of them: . . * if you change your return address to username@panix.net, it now works. . Previously, it was getting re-written back to username@panix.com. Customers . may need to do this to send mail to domains that use "Sender Address . Verifcation" since the fake panix.com mail servers don't seem to be . accepting mail right now. . . * The URL "http://www.panix.net/~USERNAME" automatically redirects to . panix.com/~USERNAME. You can get around this by appending a / to the URL: . . » www.panix.net/~USERNAME/. . * Addresses of the form xxxx@USERNAME.users.panix.net are working now. . . Of course, we're still working around the clock to solve the underlying . problem with the hijacked domain. |

| A lot of people at PANIX are asking that same question right now.
Presumably this was done by requesting a transfer from the registrar, but there are other ways to accomplish this task:
•The domain owner allows the registration to lapse (i.e. didn't renew the domain in time) •A hacker gains access to the registrars records •The domain owner failed to keep current contact information in their record -- registrar could delete the information if it's determined that contact with said individual is not possible. •Domains registered through a throw-away address (hotmail, yahoo, msn, etc.) and the account is deleted. Someone could re-use the account and request the username/password information.
I'm sure there are some other ways, but those are the ones that come to mind off the top of my head.
It's not the first time something of this nature hit the news, in September of last year a 19-year old hijacked eBay Germany by requesting a transfer. I'm not sure if they ever published how that one got through. |

I had one heck of a time getting an administrator off a record for a client, but it only took a few phone calls and a FAX verifying the address of the registrant. Any determined individual with a little moxie could have done the same. It would have been easy if I had been a disgruntled employee of the company.
Once we had the information we changed registrars, established a long nontrivial password and were home free. |

They refuse to give me code to transfer xee.org to godaddy.com because they read only dotster whois which is wrong . I filed complaint with pir.org, icann.org, and ftc.gov so far . Check for yourself whois at dotster.com for xee.org and whois at pir.org , networksolutions.com, register.com, namesecure.com , godaddy.com etc . |
