Charter

I wish Charter would go all digital here in Massachusetts instead of deleting digital channels and or moving them to the analog side.

Re: Working on it

In my area,TIME WARNER does still broadcast ANALOG (from 2 - 83,A-1) They repeast the analog one's above on the digital side (Which i think sucks!!!!! If your paying for DIGITAL SERVICE,and you go ABOVE 100,you should see the DIGITAL side of it)

Ah well..........

Local Government

I think the problem is the local government's. Many of these large cable companies have contracts with each local town that state they must broadcast analog channels. Many elderly people get just the basic packages of OTA channels and public access which runs like $10/mo, and they don't need a box.

It's going to take more than a wish on the part of the cable companies to get the local govt's to change this.

is bandwidth really the problem?

why is this even a issue... they offer VOD, HSD services VoIP, and they are trying to say that lack of bandwidth is the hold up, I smell BS. The sat. companies are convincing the general public that their all digital format is the way to go.. thank god for competition.

Yes it sucks but I guess your cable company is short in QAM and need to upgrade their network. The cable company I work for (Canadian) is feeding 100% digital channels to their subscribers. It takes more QAM but it helps to fights against satellite companies. We're working with 750Mhz and few 500Mhz networks.

Re: Charter

Charter's ways of migrating customers to digital is to raise prices until it's almost stupid to keep analog-only service.

Those channels they moved will eventually come back over to digital.

like analog extended basic costing $50.25 and Digital complete basic costing $54.95 At one point last year I couldn't afford it and when I took the digital box in to save some money I was given those rates I looked at her funny and took the box back lol

cable card

Cablecard is really the solution, I would by a Digital ready TV, and not be cluttered with there boxes. If they were smart they would push cablecard and sets to customers. Not drag everyone along with these stupid cable boxes.

"That's the future," said a Charter spokesman. "Digital simultrans and all-digital are in Charter's plans."

Re: Working on it

Your lucky being able to provide 100% digital service.......

I just think they are just trying to get by with the cheapest they can do......They could carry the DIGI side of some of those, but since they have them already analog, they dont...It makes me sick......(You can tell which ones are digi and analog by the amount of tyme it takes to authorize it when you goto it (DIGITAL take about 3 seconds, analog comes up instantly)

No analog = no Comcast here

Once analog is gone and I need a converter box on every TV then Comcast is out the door and DirecTV is in. The only thing keeping me on cable right now are those analog NTSC channels which any TV in the house can get without additional equipment. DTV has much better service for less $ and I can pick up local broadcast with an attic antenna if necessary and inject that into my house's coaxial distribution system.

Around here the few simulcast channels look much better on analog than digital anyway due to Comcast's incompetence. Can't wait until every channel is overcompressed crap.

Shouldn't be called luck and I think that were us cable companies are vulnerable, they don't see their network as the crown jewel of the company. Could be what will take down cable companies that will have ignore that fact when VDSL will be publicly released.

You *ARE* aware that you'll need a STB for every TV (unless its a dual tuner output like Dish has) when you sign up for DirecTV? Oh, don't forget the $4.95/box add on to your bill for them, too.

Re: cable card

Have you seen the problems people are having with CableCARD? Not to mention the fact that the current version of CableCARD does not support PPV/VoD.

Maybe CableCard 4.0 will be the solution.

Re: Working on it

QAM is a modulation technique!!! A cable company can not become short in QAM, the become short in bandwidth or open frequencies. If you actually work for a cable company you should at least have the proper terminology down.

Same situation as all digital cable, really, so there is no reason to stick with cable. Comcast charges per converter too. The only difference is the dish and multiswitch setup to feed the receivers. If I have to reconfigure everything anyway, Comcast is out the door in favor of something more customer-centric.

I used the term short in QAM to illustrate the fact that all current QAM in use are full (full bandwith used).
