Comments on news posted 2004-11-29 09:18:09: As users in our Security forum discuss, consumers will be able to access their credit reports on-line starting December first, opening up a number of obvious security concerns if the project isn't run securely. ..

nothing new

I have been able to view my reports and even get TXT notifications if there are any changes or inquries on my credit profile sent to my phone and e-mail.

I think its a great tool when done securely.

I don't use that site though. However, equifax offers the same thing on their own site and firefox works there.

Tried both FF and IE, neither work. Site must be broken.

Mr anon

I didn't look

I admit that I haven't looked into this and I'm too lazy right now. Does this mean we will get one free report each year or can we can a few free per year?

Re: nothing new

It's nothing new, except for the free part. You no doubt subscribe to a service from one of the credit reporting agencies. The notification services as well as unlimited or multiple access will still be available as subscription services. Free credit reports were usually available on a "trial" subscription basis from various companies, but you would have to cancel within a short time.

Federal law used to require free reports only when you were declined credit based on information in an agency's report. The creditor was required to mail you a "dear John" notice with the addresses of the credit reporting agencies. Certain states required free reports, others limited the fee to various amounts between $ and $12. This new federal law requires free reports, once a year, to all consumers, from all three reporting agencies.

Same thing for me. I'm using IE, and the site comes up, but if I click on the different regions, nothing happens.

Well, by nothing I don't go to a new page....When I move the mouse over the region, or the table under the map, data comes up on the right side of the map to show the states that are in that region.

I think what may be throwing people off is that the mouse pointer changes from the default Arrow, to the one used to indicate a link (in my case, the hand). So, one would assume that you could click, and then go to a new page, or see more information.

Clicking on the different regions of the map does change the URL

www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp#SouthernStates
www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp#WesternStates
etc

but, nothing else appears to happen.

If they are not really links, then don't make them appear to be links!

Re: firefox

The site is not broken. The credit reports will not be available until December 1st. My guess, they'll have the website active around that time.

Obviously the effects of too much turkey last Thursday.

Check out the details from the FTC themselves: »www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/cre···orts.htm

Too lazy to read all through it? "You may order your reports from each of the three nationwide consumer reporting companies at the same time, or you can order from only one or two. The law allows you to order one free copy from each of the nationwide consumer reporting companies every 12 months."

Edited: Could have sworn I replied to Mr Anon. Whatever, the details are at FTC.

 Get two free

You can free credit report a year anyway in a handful of states, including Colorado, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, and Vermont.
And every six months in Georgia.

So now if you live in those states, you can get your free state credit report and another free one under the new law.
Horray for free stuff.
