Comments on news posted 2004-11-09 14:46:23: As expected, the FCC has ruled (pdf press release) that VoIP carriers like Vonage cannot be regulated by the states, preventing a scenario where a carrier could face 51 different regulatory approaches. ..

I guess this is good?

...or is it? It seems that each state might interpret it differently if it were allowed so I am guessing this is good news.

I thought we had 50 states.

Basically DC acts like a state.

Everyone can read

It actually says 51 regulators...not regulations.

That may include DC as a "state" and count it in the 51 regulators.

Does this affect taxing?

As was seen just earlier today, some cities are trying to impose taxes onto VoIP companies even if the company has no physical presence in the city itself. If this does strike down those potential taxes, then it's a very good thing. Obviously, having a hundred-plus different taxes (one per city) piled on top of VoIP could have killed the industry. (Or, at least, killed the smaller players leaving just a few "VoIP-Bells" around.)

Nice ruling

I am happy that is only affects the nomadic VOIP services. The big cable industry will still have to pay some state tax!

Re: Nice ruling

The company won't be paying the taxes. They will be passed on to the end user of the service.
