| Dumb.
Is it illegal in some countries to use a broadband line for phone services. It's almost like the Post Office losing money because a person setup a small e-mail server, and let people setup an account. I don't know the countries laws, or policies, but I am glad I live in a country that supports its enterpreneurs, and does not stifle them. -- Why bother? |

Reminds me of the Grand Cayman islands as well with regards to C+W having a full monopoly and they banned VOIP there too. I actually wrote a letter to the editor of a grand cayman paper on the issue and they posted it. I think it was in responce to an article in there, but I dont recall. I should google for it. I really should have done more on the issue though and I admire Ilya Mafter so much and if I can do anything to help him and his family and to fight Ill be there beside him. George Soros is a terrific man as well, no matter what you believe about his political leanings, he has done enourmous work with his organization.
Iilya Mafter Im sure did nothing wrong except to fight against existing laws that were unfair.

It appears that he also took money that was not his. Is that a component part of Democraticies? Do you still support his actions including the funds that were misappropriated? quote: "Mafter is a United Nations Development Program expert. You'll be right beside him? You mean you'll serve time in a Russian Prison with him to support his situation? That's pretty honorable |

So Belarus has a coummunications Gvt mandated Cartel? Nothing new. We have a Govt mandated prescription drug Cartel in America, where it is illegal for Insurance companies and providers to organise together for low prices like the rest of the world does. |

Actually thats the problem here. Mafter was one which stuck up for freedom over corrupt governments. That was not PROVEN in a free democracy and he is innocent until proven guilty. And if he did misappropriate funds knowingly how is that even a violation? In the USA we would not allow voip to be killed no matter what. Standing up on principle in contrast to what you are allocated funds to IF its in the interests of the citizens.
I admire Mafter deeply and to what he is committed to. If you know about his background and do research into it, you will see this is a man devoted to free people.
Sorry but I disagree with your premise in allocation of funds. It really depends on if he indeed is PROVEN to be guilty of such with US Standards of law, unfortunately this is belarus and that could be a factor if they even convict him, but I dont know much about the legal system over there. In my opinion however, it sounds like the government has corrupt ties with the telco and Mafter is acting with morals and ethics to fight for such, of which he has devoted his whole life to free communications and the internet and everything like that. |

| Probably trying to undermine gov't for Soros group
If the KGB was involved, Mafter was probably trying to undermine the government as part of Soros' Open Society Institute whose stated goals are to open up old eastern bloc countries to Soros' investment groups. The fraud charges are a way to stick it to him to stop his real hidden objectives. »www.themoscowtimes.com/stories/2···013.html »www.soros.org/newsroom/news/mafter_20041019 »www.soros.org/about

OSI is not about money, its about people and issues. If you are a democrat you support Soros politically, if you are a republican you dont. Thats fine. Even Bush however will side with me on this one. Bush is a man who deeply supports freedom. Maybe not soros politically on the issues HOWEVER he does indeed support freedom. Reminds me of when a wireless engineer got jail or was detained or something in russia. Same exact thing happening yet again and in that case both democrats and republicans were in support of his release. |

International pressure will get him out of jail.
Here is what he was trying to do in the soviet union:

Now if you believe that its not worth it to fight for freedom, then you would be in a rogue non democratic state like the ones where many of our ancestors came from before they become americans.
We fought long and hard for freedom. John McCain for example spent years in a POW camp for reasons of morality because he did not want to give the enemy a propaganda win and wanted so badly for his fellow troops to succeed.
Iilya Mafter has always fought for what is right and will continue to do so. He has never wound up in trouble with the law from his true homeland. Belarus yes because he was fighting against a corrupt regime for the changes outlined in the link I posted.
He to me is a true inspiration and someone I deeply admire. |

Couldnt agree with you more. However we will continually fight for even greater freedoms. Basic freedoms in Belarus but even greater freedoms in the USA. So bad is a relative term. We ought to always strive for the best. |
