Comments on news posted 2004-08-31 11:18:51: "Social Engineering" company Friendster is feeling heat today for a decision to fire respected company engineer Joyce Park, apparently for nothing more than operating a blog (these two posts were cited as reasons). ..

If I had a friendster account I would cancel it in a heartbeat in response to this.

Re: huh?

"Trout Girl" and "Joyce" should have been a give-away, but I think it's a girl.

And those blog pages look TERRIBLE in Mozilla.

I have no interest in pursuing this story any further.

Are we hearing the whole story?

When I read this story, the only thing I could think of is that there was more to it? Fired for blogging? I don't think blogging was the reason. Maybe it was blogging instead of working. I have no idea.

It just seems like we are not hearing the whole story.

Re: Are we hearing the whole story?

i think the fact that she let people know they are now using PHP was the killer. which isn't highly sensative at all, anyone in a position to abuse that info could use many other avenues to discover they switched to PHP.

Re: Are we hearing the whole story?

First, who really cares. I have no opinion w/o both sides of the story.

2nd, she did discuss 'proprietary information'. Despite the fact that you could get this info any number of ways.... who knows.

Regardless, my guess is there is more to the story. Companies will many times use an issue like this, which isn't really an "issue", to can someone they would have a harder time canning for other reasons.

There is definately more to the story. She may not know it, but I'll bet her boss does.

It's not sensitive at all, especially considering all of their urls (formerly jsp's?) now end in php

You mean like looking at the extension at the end any Friendster page?

ROTFLMAO!

So "saying negative things about JSP" is worse than "abandoning JSP for PHP"?

Re: One of their board members.

In the eyes of some PHB's yes, yes it is. I am not saying it's right what they did (I think it is insane) but it may be a possible motive as to why.

Thank God they fired her for telling about using PHP in her blog, there's no way I would have known if not for her. I can't even find it in this URL when I click on sign up at their site »www.friendster.com/join.php How dare her discuss such private information.

Most companies would have disiplined her ....

I mean, she goes on a public setting (her blog), identifies herself as a company employee, and makes what I'm sure are unauthorized comments about the company.

That would be a big no-no at most places. Companies hire PR and marketing people to make statements about themselves to the outside world. They can't have employees making uncoordinated off the cuff comments like that. There could even be unintended legal consequences for the company for doing so.

She was pretty naive for doing this. Firing may have been harsh, but she was pretty dumb.

to every story.
We heard one side. I wonder what the other side is?
