1 edit | MICROSOFT'S POWER IN THE RELEVANT MARKET 33. Microsoft enjoys so much power in the market for Intel-compatible PC operating systems that if it wished to exercise this power solely in terms of price, it could charge a price for Windows substantially above that which could be charged in a competitive market. Moreover, it could do so for a significant period of time without losing an unacceptable amount of business to competitors. In other words, Microsoft enjoys monopoly power in the relevant market.
34. Viewed together, three main facts indicate that Microsoft enjoys monopoly power. First, Microsoft's share of the market for Intel-compatible PC operating systems is extremely large and stable. Second, Microsoft's dominant market share is protected by a high barrier to entry. Third, and largely as a result of that barrier, Microsoft's customers lack a commercially viable alternative to Windows. A. Market Share »www.albion.com/microsoft/

| Burn Bill at the STAKE like in the old days...
MICROSUCKS are convicted CRIMINALS. For the naive newbies, you would NOT even be using Windoze if it were not for the ILLEGAL marketing practices which MICROSUCKS used to FORCE PC makers and consumers to use Windoze. This is what MICROSUCKS has been convicted of in the past and what they are AGAIN being caught doing - violating anti-trust laws.
No one on the face of the Earth would desire to produce an O/S with as many defects, security holes, Bugs, and bad code as MICROSUCKS has delivered since the very first version of Windoze was forced on consumers. That's why anyone with a clue is migrating to Linux and open source software. The Internet is run on Linux, NOT Windoze. Guess why ???
With any luck, Dollar Bill and his band of convicted criminals will all BURN IN H*LL with those billions of dollars per year they have stolen from consumers!!!

Oh, puke! Go take a class on economics and come back in a year.
Windows has a plethora of alternatives, many of them free. There must be some reason people keep purchasing Windows.

| While I don't agree with the way death speaks, I don't like MS much either. As for Karl, up until recently, there has not been much of a choice for Desktop OS's. I can only think of ONE that even came close. That would be good ol Mac, and as far as I can see, the new Mac OsX is pretty much based on FreeBSD, which is based on Unix/Linux...if there was another OS with as much domination as MS-DOS/Windows for the desktop, then I missed that train. By the way, as much as I would like to see MS and Billy burn, it doesn't do much good to talk that much shit, just makes the MicroSoup fans pissy..so lets try to be nice. XPw/SP2=SP3 to fix SP2 | |

| Alternatives Anyone? A company here in town was faced with a similar situation. Microsoft was wanting them to pay an outrageous amount of money per computer to use their software. Since this company has quite a few people working in its headquarters here in town, they decided to switch to Fedora for their operating system. They are also using OpenOffice, but that can also be used on a Windows machine.
While this route may have forced the company into teaching their employees the ropes of this very user-friendly Linux distribution, it also saved them thousands of dollars. Unless Microsoft is literally forcing the groups filing these suits to use their products (I can't imagine this being the case), they should be putting some research into other alternatives as well.

You are exactly right. There are alternatives to Microsoft, excellent ones at that. This forced the city to train their employees to use the new software and I'll bet you because of this training their productivity has improved because for the first time truly know how to use the software. These law suits against MS are simply political grand standing it's to bad these Political horse rectums are using tax payer's money to sue, what a waste of money. I would vote against any government official that wasted recourses like this. Just look at FireFox they have versions for Solaris, Linux, MSW. There are some wonderful OS's based on the old Atari codes. Don't feed me this only game in town crap. -- »www.gobpl.com

1 edit | The greed of gov't is never satisfied... I guess the tobacco pockets are dry, so on to the next target to leech off of. Figures it's Frisco, well known for this kinda crap. Microsoft should cut them off and leave then high and dry to fend for themselves. What, they can't buy Corel? I use Wordperfect and it works just fine? They can't run Linux or Linspire? They have to buy x86 computers? MS operating systems? Huh? Like any of these gov't idiots are building their own boxes? They go to Dell and Gateway types and buy them 100's at a time, all with ulta cheap OEM licensing. What, they didn't see the price tag before they wrote the check?
This is typical gov't greed, plain and simple. They lost their leader in the Governor's house so they can't steal anymore money from Joe Taxpayer, so now they go after someone else looking to steal their money.

1 edit | Idiocy at its finest... How is it now that Kommiefornia can sue MS for monopoly power "for the taxpayers" yet the very own taxpayers cannot sue state or federal governments for the very same reason?!?
I have no free choice in paying my taxes. I get bundled services I don't want, need, nor wish to pay for, yet I regularly find I am robbed with every paycheck.
I want a class action lawsuit against government.
This is dripping with irony!!!!! -- Paying taxes supports organized crime!

| Fixing Windows and Livin for Linux
Somehow I spend more time fixing crap in Windows, because there are too many people who have no idea what sites they goto and just download anything that is offered to them. They are constantly calling me to fix there sh*t because of the spyware and virus OS we call Windows. I try not to bad mouth MS, but they bring it upon themselves by putting out a product that is not ready for the public. Im sorry to say, but 75% of the computer users I deal with are so fluking lost when I ask them about anything that has to do with their computer. All they say is "I don't know anything about computers". Now, don't get me wrong, I don't expect them to know "everything", just some basic sh*t.It is completely ridiculous when a customer doesn't even know what IE is..I have to say "the little blue E on your desktop" ohh...Now,you might think this aint MS fault. Well, it IS. The Greed started back around 1975 when Dan Sokol handed out tapes at the Homebrew Club of Altair BASIC (for free)and Billy went nuts and demanded that owners of the pirated BASIC send him money..Ever since then, BG and MS have spent more time trying to protect their Software than they have trying to make it work right. Unless you hack(or tweak) the sh*t out of Windows (all versions)it is crap and full of bugs.It is sad, because Windows really could be a good OS if it had the right owners. I have always donated money or time to any programmer who has produced a worthwhile Hack. I think Gates would have received more money from "pirated" Altair BASIC if he hadn't been such a crybaby about it..Good hacks produce profit. Which brings me to my heros, RMS and Linus Torvalds. I never even heard of Linux until about 5yrs ago. Up until then I thought I had life pretty easy with Windows "just click next" setup. Its great. If you don't mind being computer stupid. MS has created this problem and we are the ones having to pay for it.(damn Windows is expensive, not just money, but also TIME!!)Anyway, sorry bout my ranting, but I have spent the past 3 days fixing a bunch of Fuked up WINDOWS XP SP2 systems..."Hey Bill" thanks for the service pack from hell. I have converted about 10 friends of mine over to SUSE LINUX and not a one of them knows chit about computers, but they are very happy not having to reboot every 5 min and when something does go wrong, they have no problem getting help for me or any one of the millions of Linux users. Until they seen me using Linux w/KDE, the didn't know anything else existed but Windows and Mac. I use Windows because I have to. I use Linux because I want to. Please feel free to "bash" Windows,Linux or me if you must. (Its nice to know what others are thinking, aint it?)

Typical Trouble Call at This ISP:
ME: "Hello , Mike speaking, How may I help you?"
MSUSER: "Yeah, what's wrong with your system?"
ME: "As far as I know nothing is broken today. Are you having a problem?"
MSUSER: "Yeah, I can't get my mail."
ME: "What is the error message?"
MSUSER: "I don't know. It said something about the server being down."
ME: "Can you surf the web?"
MSUSER: "Yes but it is really, really slow."
ME: "Are you using Outlook Express or the Web interface to get your mail?"
MSUSER: "I don't know, but I can't get my mail."
ME: "Ok, are you clicking on the big blue E to get your mail or are you clicking on the picture of a letter to get your mail?"
MSUSER: "I'm clicking on the picture of a letter."
ME: "That is the picture of a letter which is on your desktop, right? Not the picture of a letter in IE, I mean Internet Explorer?"
MSUSER: "I don't know. I'm just clicking on the picture of a letter. It used to work. It worked this morning, but it won't work now."
ME: "Are you connected right now?"
MSUSER: "Yes, I have two phone lines."
ME: "Are the two little computers showing up down in the bottom right of your screen?"
MSUSER: "Yes."
ME: "Are they blinking like they are talking to each other?"
MSUSER: "No, one is blue and the other is light blue."
ME: "Ok, let me check your login on the cisco, just a second.... I see you are connected and that your round trip ping time is 4000 ms."
MSUSER: "Is that bad?"
ME: "Depends. Let me sniff your connection. Your computer is sending traffic as fast as your connection can go. Uh, huh. I see your computer is scanning other systems on the internet as fast as your connection can go."
MSUSER: "No it isn't. I'm not doing anything. I just want my mail."
ME: "The problem you have is that something on your computer is scanning other computers on the internet. It looks like a virus, or a worm, or a trojan. Do you have virus protection installed?"
MSUSER: "Well certainly!"
ME: "What vendor?"
MSUSER: "Uh, well, I'm not sure."
ME: "Is there a blue shield in the lower right of the screen near the little computers?"
MSUSER: "Uh, no there is a yellow box thingie."
ME: "OK, Is your virus program up to date? When was it installed?"
MSUSER: "It came with the computer. I don't know if it is up to date."
ME: "OK, How old is the computer?"
MSUSER: "I don't know my son used to own it and gave it to me for my birthday last year. It is a Pentium 128 or something like that."
ME: "What version of Windows is on the computer?"
MSUSER: "Windows Me, it is Windows Me."
ME: "You have a virus, or a worm, or a trojan. It is using your connection to try to find other computers to infect. Your computer is getting an error message that says the mail server could not be found or that the connection to the mail server timed out... You need to bring it in to the service department and a tech will have a look at it."
MSUSER: "But you people said you scanned for viruses. This is your fault so the service should be free right?"
ME: "Yes we scan for viruses. No this is not our fault. No the repair will not be free."
MSUSER: "Well, never mind. I will just use it as it is."
ME: "I'm sorry, you don't understand. I can't let you use it as it is. It is infected and it is trying to infect other computers on the internet. I have to block your account until you can show that the virus/worm/trojan has been removed from it."
MSUSER: "I PAY YOU GOOD MONEY FOR INTERNET ACCESS. THIS IS YOUR FAULT. I SHOULD SUE YOU PEOPLE. YOU SAID YOU SCANNED E-MAIL FOR VIRUSES. THIS IS YOUR FAULT."
Click, MSUser hangs up. MSUSER is now pissed at me and on his way to my office to tell me what a POS I am. Why? Well because Microsoft FAILED to build a decent security model into their software before the exposed it to the Internet.
NOTE: These conversations usually last about twenty minutes each and are even worse than the above. I don't think California should sue MS, I think I should sue MS. Microsoft has brought computing to the masses, but Microsoft HAS NOT BEEN RESPONSIBLE to the masses. They have made commodity computing possible. They have provided a functional operating system, with NO reasonable security defaults, to keep market share. They have created the problem. If you want to be the king, you need to be a GOOD king, not just a king. If you fail to be a good king, expect a revolt.
