I wonder how long, until the needs of Broadband customers start showing with the major portals and websites. When the content will become better, and the next power applications calls on us to use more of an upstream for gamming and such.

Just fixed up my parents with a DSL connection (1.5/960 from Qwest with MSN Premium:)) and a new Computer. Now My Dad is having fun with the internet for the first time.:D  I have warned him about the evils and made sure all of the auto updates are set. My Dad is a "turn out the lights freak" so I showed him how to put the computer sleep. One thing I noticed for the first time because I rarely shut my computer down is the the Auto update will bring the computer out of sleep mode long enough to load the update and then return the system to sleep. This must be a function of the LAN. I know there are some security issues in this but he sits behind his NAT firewall, and now I know his antivirus, firewall software is up to date now so he is safe as possible. You begin to see how good MSN is when you watch people like my parents using it. Those of us here could careless about most of the features MSN has but for My parent it is great. Next I will introduce then to FireFox which is the best browser there is. I have finally made it my default browser. The only thing I miss from IE is the handy little app' call IE Spell (»www.iespell.com)
Does anyone know of a similar spell check that works with FireFox?

i dont believe that broadband has surpassed dialup..i think its buncha bullshit to make the broadband business look better. noway in hell is there more broadband. look at all those places where broadband aint even available yet or the prices for broadband is lil tohigh......dialup is still the king, iwouldnt believe what the government said. |

Make sure to read whole page and make sure to pick dictionary.
One or two clicks does it.

Hey how about getting some of that broadband in northeastern Pennsylvania.
I've been on dialup since 1999 and I can NOT get anything (too far from CO for DSL, cable company won't run cable, too far away from wireless ISP which is for businesses only, ISDN is too much money...same with satellite).

Unfortunately i don't know weather to believe this story, the one i saw earlier this year, or the article last year that reported this same thing.
I believe the truth is in the middle that sometime during the past 12 months all internet users tipped the scales to 50/50 dialup vs broadband respectfully. I read an industry paper that reported some of the same statistics earlier this year.It also stated that now the real uphill battle for providers has come.
They have 2 choices. Do something to bring more dial up users who are in the availability areas onto broadband OR extend the reach of broadband further into rural areas.
The problem with the first is that the industry knows its the prices that are keeping available dialup users away. These dialup users don't see any benefit to migrating to a faster service. So in effect, seeing no benefits, paying an extra $20-40 for these users isn't gonna get them to sign on. I think we still need a $20-$24 broadband tier be it something as low as 384/128. That way people would be willing to come off dialup for the same price they already pay for dialup. Then when they see the benefit and want a faster speed all they need to do is upgrade their packages since they will now be locked into a 1-2yr contract.
Otherwise its going to be massive rural rollouts and right now the industry is realizing that while they can do this they will never see the same types of profit they have experienced by saturating Urban and Suburban areas. Remember the bottom line to these companies are profits.
And when the growth starts to go stagnant so does their profit margins. |

So you think "rural" equates to "uneducated". That was a very un-substantiated and ignorant statement. For your ref. I lived in a a very rural area and had dialup for three years before Comcast rolled out broadband for us. I have a Criminalistics degree and owned a business for 10 years. Where does that fit in your grand determination of who uses dialup?
