setup?

I don't know how Apples work but couldn't she just go to her air card setup utility and pick a different connection? Isn't that what you have to do when you go into an internet cafe?

What's sad is that clueless people like this vote.

Yes, she could. Unfortunately, people with Macs are usually even more clueless than normal people - if it does not work, they immediately assume their Mac is fine, and something else is messing up.

In this case, if she simply selected her neighbor's network she would have been fine. Except, of course, she would not have been able to write an idiotic article for the NYT, and the idiotic NYT editor would not have read and accepted it, and published it. If writers don't get published, and the NYT doesn't print, they starve.

How did this turn into a political rant?

There are some things still going on that are entirely innocent of political interpretation you know.

1. Journalist does not know how to select a wireless network properly.

2. Political rants.

3. Bert and Ernie are good friends.

Two and three have nothing to do with the article.

What this article is really about

Back to the article itself, it should be looked as a "lifestyle challenges with technology" story, not a technical guide to the clueless. After all, many journalists (or posters in this forum) writing stories or editorial about just anything else are not really experts in the field--they just tell it as they see it, and sometimes they get lucky in finding some expert who has a clue among all the quacks who will happily spread misinformation as long as they are being quoted and important. So, in the grand scheme of things, WiFi is only a small aspect of life in general, and, contrary to what seems to be the opinion of some on this board, it is not something that most normal human beings should be terribly focused on. It should just work, like a coffee maker or a washing machine is expected to just work for people who do not understand the fine points of electricity, fluid dynamics and the other underlying theoretical foundations on which it is based. This story was just about how she, a normal human being who thought she had come to a working arrangement with technology, got utterly confused when the arrangement did not work. The story is then about how a company that should know better, instead of steering her into the right direction by helping her figure out what was going on, added to the confusion. That company's representatives low and high misunderstand what was going on. Finally, the story hints at something that may concern *this* community in particular, which is that Verizon might be attempting to monitor and block connection sharing through a NAT/router.

pandering to the "stupid culture"

The Lisa Napoli article is pandering to the "stupid culture" whereby authors and speakers dumb-down what they say, imitating idiots, in order to seem more like "regular folks".

Apple iBook indeed. Probably couldn't figure out how to use a real PC.

How interesting,

Actually, considering the dearth of brainless "tech" articles proliferating publications from Newsweek to Womans Day, one would think that "we" would have become numb to their disjointed blathering. This thread is much more interesting than the original article. As an aside to some of you (and you know who you are), the medication your physician prescribed won't work unless you take it EVERY DAY!

Check the ads at the bottom of the thread

Is it just way too coincidental that the adds
at the bottom of the thread are for subscriptions
to -- you guessed it -- The New York Times!!!
