Let me translate this for you...

"Our 1940's style "Media Syndicate" is losing control despite our complete ownership of all major legislative bodies around the globe. (Please ignore the fact that we live lifestyles most of you can't imagine and we are fantastically profitable even in shitty economic conditions). WHY CAN'T YOU LITTLE PEOPLE GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEADS THAT THE WORLD REVOLVES AROUND US?!?!?! Every Senator and House Member licks our boots CLEAN. We will CRUSH you if you don't start doing as we tell you soon....you'd better quit it.......we really mean it this time!"

Screw 'em.

i shed a tear, as well =P

i'm thinking somewhere between 1/4 to 1/2 (if not more) of those 10 petabytes, if not more of that is porn, a mushrooming industry few professionals would shed a tear for.

as for the movies/music/games, i can't really find a justification for sharing movies or downloading games. it's just not a commodity i can justify downloading to see if i want to buy it later, as i don't watch movies more than a time or two. hell, i doubt i've even watched 3/4ths of my purchased DVDs even once.

i downloaded UT2K4, but went out and bought $30 of DVDRs. now, i plan on buying 2K4 eventually, even tho it's a game i only play every several months, but it's a game oozing of replay, care for the fans, and an amazing company whose grassroots were try-before-you-buy. not to mention it retailed at a day's wages @ minimum wage (an affordable $30). for pirating that, i feel a bit guilty.

OTOH, i can't see music surviving WITHOUT P2P filesharing. the record industry and radio industry are about as dirty as they get, keeping non top 40 acts off the air. there are just too many things about the whole music industry that are just not right. they need to crash and burn (and that's putting it mildly) and go away.

copyright law is a dinosaur from the days you had to actually leave your house to buy music/a book/movies/etc. it needs to leave the 19th century (yes, 1800s) and rewrite itself for 2000, and not by Big Media (read: DMCA, Pirate Act, Induce Act, etc)

Numbers, numbers

Well 10 Petabytes Daily should be kept on contrast to the 100 Petabytes of Daily SPAM traffic that is plugging up the Fibre Pours of the 'Net......

Hypothetical

Ok,so 10 petabytes is 90,071,992,547,409,920 bits.If the average movie downloaded is lets say,1 gig thats 90,071,992 movies. If each user downloads 4 movies a day thats 22,517,998 people downloading movies each day.Lets say each movie costs $10 a piece.Thats $900,719,920
dollers a day.In one year thats $328,762,770,800.Cut that in half if they only get 2 movies a day and only 2 gigs of songs.Im no mathematician, but i think they did there study on another planet.

Re: Hypothetical

I think they mean 10 Petabytes available on any given day on p2p

an available shared file is not equal to an actual transfer, unless you are an industry spinmeister

Sorry for being nitpicky but you forgot to use the 8 bits in a byte thing

If my math is correct, 10PB would be 2,500,000,000 songs in 128kbps (4MB each). If the RIAA really wanted you to go to Steve Jobs' place and get it, then that would be $2,475,000,000 in 'losses due to unrealized gains' (lawyer-speak). Most people don't have the $9,900 it takes to fill up their 40GB iPod, and I sympathize fully with them.
Because not all of this piracy is RIAA-member music, you need to figure in some for MPAA-member movies and misc. copywritten software and other media. So we need to figure out how much is with what. Hmmm... This brings up an interesting question. How do they know what is copywritten material and what is not? And why didn't they turn them into the proper authorities?

Look what I found!

On Monday, BigChampagne, a firm that tracks file-sharing networks, said that 1 billion songs were available for free trading on a variety of popular file-sharing networks in June – up from 820 million a year ago.

The quality of these files sucks

Movies and music with the quality of a Yugo oh wow I want some. Letting anyone have access to any files on my computer to share yeah right take a flying leap. To the movie and music industry make a good product and some people may actually pay for a good copy.
Security problems should abound here since people will download almost anything for free.

I do think when a new version comes out the older versions should be discounted at least 50% for the prior version and more for older versions. After all if the new versions are that much better then we should want them instead.

From the land of I never that I'd see the day I got this old.

you do realize that even in bold type, your response still idiotic, and would not be worth reading if it were bright red and flashing like a neon sign

Re: Evil

Yes I'm sure the movie production company is losing thousands to this posting of a picture. Besides you are allowed show images of movies as long as the proper credit is given. I think we all know where this came from.

CacheLogic, who claims sharing costs ISP's $10 million per year in bandwidth and network management costs...
Hmm, maybe that's why I pay $40 a month for my connection, then.

its the future

Companies need to realize that rather than trying to stop it, which im pretty sure its unstoppable right now, they should figure out what ways they can make money from it, ie: music sales (Walmart & Apple are sure making some killings on it)

"Download "Condition Zero 11$" receive 2 music downloads from Walmart.com, etc they should get together and bundle items, rather than whine about something that would take a lot to stop.
