At some point in a P2P transaction, the downloading computer needs to be able to reach the sharing computer. At that point it gets the IP address of the sharing computer. (You can use proxies, but those can seriously slow things down to the point of making the P2P connection unusable.) If you hide your IP address from everyone else, then how do you expect other computers to deliver electronic information to yours? (Kind of like telling someone to mail you the information but refusing to give your mailing address.) -- -Jason Levine http://www.jasons-toolbox.com/ http://www.PCQandA.com/ http://www.urateit.com/ |

Its been discussed in the Filesharing Forum: »new kinds of anonymous p2p software ...
Some of them include:
Freenet (and its companion, Frost). MUTE GNUnet
They may not be as fast as leeching of a T3, but not as slow as you think. |

Exactly! God, I laugh soooo hard when I hear people talk about how they think there are such things as "IP scramblers" or some snake-oil thing like that that will make you anonymous! -- Science-fiction yesterday, fact today, obsolete tomorrow. - Otto O. Binder |

I think every internet account should have a fixed IP Addy and the ISP should be required to maintain an accurate and up-to-date PUBLIC list of the who those IP Addresses are being used by. -- If we only knew...? |

I think the point of NAK's post was that we should do away with dynamic IP addresses...
The bad part of that is the fact that we would run out of IP addresses REAL FAST.
The whole point of dynamic IP addresses is to allow a many to one relationship.
A dial-up ISP may have 5,000 users, however, only own 1,000 IP addresses because their maximum load on their service is only 1,000 users at any given time and point. Edit: Spell correct |

| reply to mrchris I think that's the point of NAK's post. DHCP should be eliminated for public IPs.
To comment on the other -- I'm not sure how these things work or how effective they are. However, I did read that a new bread of P2P using a collection of clients that each broadcast tiny pieces of a whole file by using some kind of broadcast streaming protocol, could eliminate the ability to trace the source. I'm not sure how well it would work but... |
