Misleading advertising needs to be stopped, plain and simple. I used to use Joi Internet back in my Field Technician days and needed a reliable cheap dialup to test stuff with, but those days have been numbered.
You can not claim dsl speeds over dialup, there is no possible way that this will ever happen. I remember seeing the billboard on 285 for Joi Internet, and them pushing "DSL Speeds at Dialup Price". Now tell me how misleading that is? If I wasn't smart enough I would jump on that deal in a heart beat.

| How ironic
BellSouth sues another company for false advertising. Perhaps BellSouth should look at its house before throwing stones.
FWIW, I'm referring to BellSouth's padding the bill with "recovery" charges, yet not including them in the advertised price. -- A village is missing its idiot. Help it November 2004. |

BellSouth does not need to file a lawsuit. They should just do a time comparison of MP3 file download between DSL and dial-up. Or show download time between DSL and dialup. |

| MOre than likely because of the false advertising and the fact they are directly using Bellsouth's name in the ad.
I really cannot say that I blame them for this law suit. I have always been against the false advertising by companies like Joi and AOL that say dialup can be faster than DSL. Just look at AOL's new ads. |

You know what, I know people that actually have dumped their DSL after seeing the endless parade of Joi ads, radio spots, and billboards. (Then I get the "why doesn't it work" call cause I'm the "computer person". )

| Dial up acceleration, blah!
I have been stuck on 56k for 4 years now since I moved. Finally getting Charter cable this next Friday.
I have tried all sorts of dial-up providers. At one point I even tried Joi Internet. I normally manually make my dialup connections, never use the software. For Joi I just had to try out the "accelerated internet".
All they are using is a caching server and compression on images, just like the article states. When browsing forums you constantly had to ctrl-F5 to get a refresh. Downloads/uploads were still the same speeds, same shitty latency in gaming.
I didn't fall for their scheme, I mearly wanted to see what the acceleration was about. Once you have brought up a page, that page is loaded a slight bit faster the second time you visit it, due to it being cached, but as soon as you ctrl-F5 it, it's back to the slow loads.
All these commercials that come on showing their accelerated dialup access just makes me sick, and the people they interview.... I pray these people are paid to say good things about them. It's either that or they are completely computer illiterate. -- Just read the instructions |

| The problem I have is ...
... that these ISPs won't point out that this is all a software solution, and that it has nothing to do with any remarkable powers the dial-up ISP has suddenly procured. You're not going to get much more out of a dial-up than your modem's built-in v.90 compression, and anyone can go out and get one of the many browser cache/pre-fetch applications available, use it with their existing ISP, and get the same effect.
Aside from that, I don't have a problem with advertising browsing speed enhancements over standard dial-up, although Joi seems to be an exception when they try to compare themselves to DSL. Earthlink has been careful to note in their television ads that their service doesn't help the speed of files, attachments, video, etc. |

I live in Atlanta...AND OMG!!! Every way i look, there is a Joi billboard saying how you could get dsl speeds for only $6.99. I'm not as annoyed by the lies as much as i am annoyed with the sheer number of signs. Jesus!! Where are they getting all this advertizing funds? |

"Although, the connecting speed indicated same speed as before (i.e. 28.8K, 36K, 48K, 53K) your surfing is dramatically faster, pages that previously took almost 30 seconds to load, can now be viewed in less than 7 seconds, on average, and sometimes even faster! Within few days you will notice dramatic improvement of your dial-up performance in some cases, pages will displayed more swiftly than on a DSL."
they also pretty much claim that you can run aol, and other services on top of their connection, virtually eliminating the service of the other company.
yep they need to go. |

but does netzero call out a certain company and use speed comparisons to a certain company? different ball game when you say why get bellsouth dsl when our dialup is just as fast for 9 bucks a month.. bellsouth downloads a mp3 at 2min 15secs our high speed dial up is 5 min and 15 secs, which is only 2 min slower then bell south.
go bellsouth !! get these imposters! |
