All these consumer grade manufactures are faced with increasingly short product life cycles and feel pressure to push stuff out the door as quickly as possible- regardless of the state of the firmware/user interface. The buyers, in effect, become beta-testers. In their partial defence, Netgear has had similar issues with this chipset (Atheros) too, so it might be bigger than just a Dlink issue.
I'm all for open source, the Linksys Wrt54G has become a enterprise class beast because of the talents of some of their users.

in my opinion i havnt quite thought about drivers being open source but if third parties have improved some things on the router then why wouldnt companies make a base version of the drivers...then say OK...heres an open source model of the same thing...geek out there...go nuts
i like that but would it actually happen??? -- My Gallery Pics |

These is another Reason why I dont buy lower end products. The only thing that got my attention these years from these "company's" was the lniksys with the hacked firmware... I think thats worth a look., other than that I would not touch a d-link from a mile away!
By the way I think there ws a model from Netgear that after a firmware update it would die... Maybe is just a marketing thing -- Over Kill Systems |

Nope... it just uses 2 54Mbps channels to get the "theoretical" speed of 108Mbps. If you're lucky you can probably get 20-30Mbps out of each channel. -- Do the world a favor, Saddam. Kill yourself. |

I don't know what the problem is. I updated my firmware, rebooted my router and everything works great. |

I have a DLink DI-614+, and as a router it's a piece of [canine excrement]. After getting the newest firmware: had to reboot several times a day, long delays in getting to the WAN, severe bandwidth loss. Now, I've made it an access point tied into a Linksys BEFSR41 router. Haven't rebooted it yet, nor had any delays getting out. All nodes have a full, dedicated pipe; like a switch is supposed to work.

I have many DLINK products and I begin to regret that. I bought them cheap. DI-704P router with useless options and all useful are missing or disabled. Often crashes for no reason. Print server only allows me to cancel print job. DWL-2000AP almost died when I tried using SuperG with WPA. I had to flash back firmware to remover SuperG. DWL-G650 - driver is a joke. Disconnects, poor WPA support. Just look at DLINK forum for adventures with latest driver. DSL-300G, It was quite a good modem. No complaints except for ugly look.
When I was buying network gear, I chose DLINK because of "better" lifespan and look than linksys or netgear. -- There are 32 types of people. Those who understand HEX and those who don't. |

I too have a DI-614+ which is a paper weight since the firmware upgrade. Is there any fix for this now dead unit? |

I have a DLink DI-604 router which I initially had slowdowns with my OOL connection, but a firmware upgrade and reboot of the modem cleared things up. It works great now. |

I've also got a DI-614+, and upgraded the firmware a few days ago. Overnight, it locked up. It has been up and running for several days now after a cold reboot, though.
I haven't noticed a difference in time to connect or performance. My wireless cards are DLink DWL-122 USB adapters on computers running Linux (linux-wlan-ng drivers). I run 128-bit WEP. |

| I have a D-link 614+ as well. I paid $2 AR a year ago. It's been pretty stable. Haven't had a crash for months. Granted I've only updated the firmware when I first got it. The wireless range sucks bad for some reason though. For $2 I think it's worth it. |

In the marketing 'hype' it claims you must use a specific D-Link network card as well to experience the 'extreme' speeds. I wonder if the people who are experiencing the problems have wireless cards othere than what D-Link specifies? -- Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. From what I have read, it seems every G brand of router is having their share of problems. Not just Dlink. My previous router was this Dlink 624, and I really liked it except it kept disconnecting many times each day.
My current Linksys WRT54G rev2.0 works reliable, except its severely lacking in features compared to the Dlink. Rarely gets updated, and the hacked firmwares do not really add anything usefull for the average person. And even the hacked firmware rarely gets updated anymore. Your at the mercy of the guy writing it and what he wants in it, not what you want. |
