Apples to Apples?

In looking at the posted rates, the question that immediately comes to mind is whether the rates are normalized for CATV subscriber versus non-CATV subscriber. The rate listed for Comcast is the non-CATV subscriber rate. I don't have enough background on the others to tell at a glance whether the rates listed are CATV subscriber or non-CATV subscriber rates, however, many look suspiciously like the CATV subscriber rate.

It marks Comcast at $57.95 USD at PPP, so I assume your answer is sans CATV.

Doesn't Comcast consider $57.95 the base price for HSI with a bundled discount to $42.95 if you have cable? This allows them to charge the extra $15 for those who don't have CATV service.

Re: Oh Canada

maybe they need to get there advertisments out more.
up here where i live there is DSL avalable but you wouldnt know it.
on the flip side though cable has deals and commercials all the time about there service. i dont see any commercials besides ride the light from qwest, but it never says anything about dsl, high speed internet or anything.
and there even cheaper than cable by 20 bucks you would think they would want to let customers know. cause i know alot of poeple that just want somthing faster than dial up.
and 640 /256 would be just peachy for them to the almost double price from cable. so in my opinion they need to advertise better.

Re: Apples to Apples?

yes that is correct, they charge 15 more if your a non cable tv customer. man for that price your paying for limited cable without getting limited cable ..lol
limited cable(locals and a few other channels) is only 15 bucks..lol

Which is why I left...

It just amazes me how cable subscriber growth is continuing. After 2 years as a CC HSI customer I jumped ship for the much cheaper VoL the second they deployed an RT in my 'hood. And as I face yet ANOTHER CATV price increase (just had 2 last year and 1 the year before that) this coming Feb., I'm on the Dish Network free HD box waiting list. The day they install is the day I say bye to CC forever. But again, looking at subscriber growth I'm part of a tiny minority of disgrunted CATV and cable HSI customers who actually jump ship rather than just complain but continue to write the cable pig their ever increasing check amounts.

Dish just sent me my price increase warning. Cable is not the only ones pigging out.

What's the Dish Network free HD box? Where do I sign up??:D

We should also add the cost of a phone line for DSL service if we're going to be that particular.

Re: Which is why I left...

The price increase I saw for the top 100 was $1. Comcast has raised my rates over $15 over the past 2 years and now wants more...on top of them already being more than DBS.

A $1-$2 increase every few years which is what type of increase we see with DN is reasonable. 3 increases amounting to double digit percentage hikes in 2 years is IMHO not.

The free 811 box which also includes on OTA HD tuner is for new subs and is shown on the promotion page »www.dishnetwork.com/content/getd···ex.shtml The only requirement is 12 month contract for their $10/mo or $110/yr HD tier. I don't know what an upgrade charge would be for current subs. Because of the free box promotion the 811 box is in short supply...typically a 4 week wait.

Re: Where's the fibre?

Why would they roll out FTTC or FTTH when lighting up RTs is so much cheaper at this point? Besides, even if they did and sold 10.0/10.0 connection plans, the modems and or PCs would be the bottleneck. Current consumer RAM and VRAM couldn't process data that fast. You wouldn't be able to see the difference.

DN is currently locking new customers who sign up at the old rates through 1/2005.

Re: Where's the fibre?

You wouldn't see the difference between 200 megs/sec and 1000 megs/sec since your HD's can only handle about 150 megs/sec eh?

But you WOULD see the difference from 1.1 megs/sec(what I have), and 100 megs/sec.

Re: Where's the fibre?

all of my computers here handle 100mbit LAN just fine.

My old 200mhz pentium machine seems to cope with serving up files at around 11,600 kbytes a second...

Consumer RAM is capable of gigabytes a second bandwidth.. the bottleneck is the network card/linespeed. And it probably will be for a long time.

I dont see japanese ISP's with 100mbit fiber having problems with ONU's coping...

Re: Apples to Apples?

My Cox HSI is 39.95 plus another c. $10 for basic cable. The HSI alone I think is $59.95, but I'm not sure about dat.
