| Modern day shell accounts When I had my first chance to connect up to the internet in the early 90's away from my government job (I'm one of those fossil drivers that remember mil and arpa and used those in the course of my "appointed duties") it was a DELIGHT to connect into a dialup "shell account" on a VAX machine and be able to hunt usenet from home.
I knew what I wanted and where to go on my own, thank you - I had no need for "home pages" or "portals" and it was nice. When DSL finally "came to town" about a year ago, Verizon wanted to sell me MSN (gag reflex suppressed) ... I wouldn't have gone for it at ALL if I was given no choice but to become a happy Redmondroid ... fortunately, Verizon DID design their distribution package so that I could avoid Aiyee, and the Cult of Redmond and pipe directly into the net.
Don't need a discount, don't mind paying full price so long as I don't have to connect through a "branded" service. I'm as happy as a pig in ... ummm ... -- Kevin McAleavey support@nsclean.comhttp://www.nsclean.com/

| OOL does this now ... But you don't get a discount. Optimum Online news servers SUCK , there email is almost useless, and they don't offer any web-space. I pay $49 P/M for 10000/1000 and thats all i use. You can do a search in the Optonline forum and see what I'm talking about..

| seems to be alot of pent up demand... Although people say this would only appeal to a minority of DSL/high speed subscribers, I think an ISP doing this would find a loyal following, even if they metered throughput used $0.40/GiB ? (not connect time). People like us are tired of paying more for a more restrictive account.
Give us less "stuff" and more freedom to do what we want and people will sign up. I would switch in a heartbeat.
IP address, pipe and nothing else - that is what I want.
Wireless ISPs realize this and some of them are creating no frills accounts.

| YES, that what I want, what they do best ! I go where I get what I want. IF I want email I know where to go. I know where to hosting to. Just gave me a connection and a price. Thank you! I hope to find that kind of an ISP and I have 11 months to do it , or for them to become real. D | |
