Good Speeds.

"it must be capable of... ...2Mbps while stationary indoors"

Finally. Some decent speeds. Lets see if it will actually work as promised.

ummmm... what will you need these speeds for on a little cell phone? Watching LOTR on that mini screen? I think 128k is overkill for cell phones. Whose gonna need the speed of these networks? It's a case of: they'll come if we build it.

I think that's more for using it as a modem for a laptop or PDA...

If you plug your cell phone into your laptop you can use it as a modem.

If your cell phone can play music you can stream it off the internet.

If your phone can take pictures you can send them over the internet.

128kbps would be marginal for any of those purposes.

BTW I don't need to do any of those things, but automatically pooh-poohing the usefulness is short sighted IMO.

National does not = everywhere

I've seen the EvDO coverage plans for my market.
Unlike our 1X rollout, we WILL NOT be making EvDO available on all cell sites.

Our initial EvDO coverage plan is to cover the airport, downtown, and east to the beaches.

Nada on the westside or rural parts of town.
Nothing in Tallahassee, Nothing in Gainesville.
If you're in an area where you can get our EvDO...you can probably already get cable or dsl.

This means that it's as good as wi-fi (or perhaps a bit worse?)

No you do not generally need broadband on your cellphone. But you need broadband speeds on your laptop when your laptop is hooked to your cellphone. In other words, it is for your laptop, TabletPC etc.

The more important question is how much is it going to cost? Depending on the cost it might be another unused feature of the cell phone that is exercised by those corporate executives and wall street types with deep pockets only.

Re: Download No upload

All The IPS,they give you more download speed, but` NO upload speed
And Verizon DSL upload is to slow 125, kbps look watt you need to server a game like Battlefield, and my cable is 3000/384, Verizon DSL upload speed 125, kbps that sucks. »www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/audio.pl?suc···av=sucks

We highly recommend Battlefield servers to be run on dedicated
server platforms. Currently, the best performance is on a machine
with the following specifications:

8-player
WinOS/800Mhz processor/256MB RAM/ADSL connection

16/32-player
WinOS/1Ghz processor/256MB RAM/T1 connection

64-player
WinOS/2Ghz processor/256MB RAM/T3 connection (You will need at
least 4Mbit of bandwidth)

Re: National does not = everywhere

I wonder if we will be able to signup just for the data and pay $79/mo. just for data and not have to get a voice service along with it.

I've been waiting for this for a long time!

2mbps@home

According to the FCC website, to be able to truly call a service third generation wireless, it must be capable of minimum speeds of 144kbps while in motion (traffic), 384kbps while walking, and 2Mbps while stationary indoors.
Am i understanding this correctly? We could choose to use Verizon as our isp, and have mobile connectivity PLUS 2mbps when at home? I'd pay $79.99 to be able to access the internet from anywhere in Houston on my laptop since I could drop my current broadband connection. This sounds like a good thing if Verizon this time chooses to deliver on its promises.

Re: Good Speeds.

Umm, EvDO= Evolution Data Only. Hmm Data Only would mean no voice wouldn't it? So you wouldn't get those speeds on your cell phones now would you?

Hmm, I guess you had a hard time with the reading comprehension tests.

Re: 2mbps@home

Actually you would have 2 Mbps sitting at your desk in your office according to the standard or 2 MBps sitting in the coffee shop or inside any building.

While the service is going to be more expensive than cable or DSL (79.95 per month is on the expensive side for most people.) It will be useful for those of us who like or need mobile internet access as well as something at home.

As I said about Richochet when people were complaining about it's price. This is not a DSL or cable replacement, so it will not be priced as such.

Hmm, I guess you're an idiot who doesn't read Press Releases carefully.

BEDMINSTER, N.J., and LAS VEGAS, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless,
the nation's largest and most reliable wireless voice network and the leader
in next generation technology deployment, will begin immediately to expand its
BroadbandAccess service nationally. Powered by Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-
DO)
third generation (3G) wide-area network, BroadbandAccess commercial
service, with average user speeds of 300-500 kilobits per second (kbps), is
expected to be available in many major U.S. cities this summer.

Does it say "data only" or "data optimized"? Yeah, you need to understand the meaning of comprehension indeed.

Additionally, unless you're using an analog phone from 1995, your cell phone is digital and the voice is converted to data before it leaves that handset. So everything trasmitted IS 100% digital data. You need to "comprehend" the technology and terminology before you go around spouting that ignorance of yours.

Sheehs.. some people gotta prove how stupid they are every day with their posts.

That's the FCC standard....Verizon's EvDO service will only hit those 2Mbps speeds only occasionally, in bursts...

Yes, it's true at the beginning it will primarily be for laptops (and pda's), but it's only a short matter of time before they contract a handset that will use it as well. AT&T has both 'edge' cards and a handset (which I have) that use EDGE, so I have no doubt that Verizon is planning the same. There just isn't enough profit margin from business-only oriented wireless use to justify the development cost and rollout! Just ask anyone who used to work at Ricochet about that!
