| I Don't Like This
I don't like this at all. First the latest release of Zone Alarm screws around with my mail program, and now this? Time to look into Norton's Firewall... -- I am the beginning. I am the end. I am forever, and I will continue to exist long after everything, even hope itself, has been destroyed. |

This is a major part of an email Team Z members received on Monday Dec 15, 2003. I don't think there should be an issue adding the information to this thread. I think it should clear up any concerns.
"Check Point is excited about our technology and the new market opportunities we bring to them in the consumer market. They are completely committed to our products, including Integrity and, of course, our ZoneAlarm family of products. They are big fans and they want us to keep growing them. And that brings up an important point--after the acquisition closes in the first quarter of 2004, Zone Labs will continue to operate as an independent division of Check Point. There's no change in leadership or personnel in either company.
This is a wonderful milestone for Zone Labs, and we couldn't have done it without the support of our great customers, and, especially, the dialogue we have with the members of Team Z. We all look forward to continuing that dialogue and sharing with you the next steps on our journey."

Check Point and Zone Labs acquisition press release
said by Gregor Freund: "Our shared passion for excellence and Check Point's commitment to Zone Labs' products, partners and customers were paramount in making this decision," said Gregor Freund, CEO and co-founder of Zone Labs. "Our common vision will result in the most complete and manageable security solution to protect the fastest-growing, most vulnerable segment - network endpoints."
As a long time user of Zone Labs firewall....I have the utmost confidence that this will only enhance what is already a very fine product. -- "It's 5 O'clock Somewhere" |

Good news, but let's hope they stick to it. A big company might let the little company that they buy operate independently for awhile, but eventually someone in the big company decides that things would be much better if the little company followed the big company's guidelines. That's what many companies say when there is an acquisition, until a few months later there are changes. |

Checkpoint has no software products for the desktop. They mostly make hardware. It's a natural fit without an overlap. Therefore the chances of Zonealarm being shelved are slim. Rather it allows both to reach markets they couldn't before. -- Nick Braak - Redbox Security |

Not so. A NAT firewall will not prevent outbound traffic, so you can't stop things like Media Player or other similarly inclined programs from connecting to the internet at arbitrary intervals and "phoning home". ZA lets me know when this happens, and lets me block these outbound connections.
For an example, go to www.grc.com and download LeakTest. -- That which does not kill me merely prolongs the agony. |

Time to put ZA setup into my electronic scrap book.
It's a good idea to archive good, free programs. I still have a copy of ZA's first free release. Download the install/setup package and archive it for future use. A situation may arise that calls for a quick fix and one of those old apps just might do it.
