| A change is certainly needed of some sort... In all honestly, ICANN seriously needs to go. Some sort of inependent, international committee (it doesn't HAVE to be the UN) should take over. After all, just because America created the internet no longer means that we should have control over what is now an international, intercontinental network. Some sort of democratically elected international board to govern the internet is going to happen... And hopefully soon. -- Male by birth... Geek by choice. -- We want your soul... | |

Read the article again. Not only was the concept created and realized here, but (here's the kicker) we own 85% of the assets of the internet. Own. Meaning we (as a country with our taxes and as consumers with our fees) have paid for it. Not Nigeria, Zambia, Peru, Iran, China or any other country. If they want control of the Internet, I say let 'em have their 15% and be happy, unless they want to walk in here and fork over every single dime that's been paid by us, the government, and the telecom corporations to build it.
The older I get, the more isolationist I become. Screw the rest of the world on this - they want the internet, they can build one themselves. -- 4WD, 4WS, 400hp, two turbo's and too much fun.

Actually, most of the internet is owned by companies like Level3, ATT, Worldcom, Qwest and others... Unless you are an investor in those companies, none of you money went there. We (coolective United States citizens) don't own 85% of the internet, the backbone providers and their investors (like myself) do. And the portion that was paid for with tax payer money, ARPANET, has all but disappeared or been bought up.
But of course that doesn't mean anything. ICANN controls IP space and that affects everyone the globe over, not just the United States. Learn what ICANN does before you lecture people about who owns the internet and what not because has nothing to do with ICANN. All ICANN does is assign addresses and AS numbers. -- Male by birth... | sticking there noses where it don't belong said by richardk2: Let me clarify. All the UN bashing shows that majority of us in our society have the head in the sand. If we continue to act ignorant and arrogant, things will be worse for us. Guys, it's time we start behaving properly and respectfully and stop harmming ourselves and our future generations.
The tone of all these post here show how the average person get his/her education from Jay Leno show or something. Being macho and feeling superior is not going to buy us anything. Playing fair and cooperating will.
Tell me, what good thing has the U.N. done? The United Nations should stick to what they are good at and that is giving relief, food and medicine to poor people. Other than that they shouldn't be sticking there noses into something where it don't belong. All it amounts to is ICANN is in the United States and that's what they hate the most. Most of us know what the U.N is like, I think it's time for you take some history lessons.
I don't think I should have to appease to the U.N. or anyone else. I can play fair and cooperate but I also believe in what's right which the U.N. can't seem to get. Give control of the internet, let's see how much of a internet you have left after the U.N. is done with it. If you think that the internet would be better off under the U.N., than my friend that is wishful thinking.

| Re: sticking there noses where it don't belong So true indeed....I wonder if Richardk2 understands the true issue at hand.Hey "Rich" go do some indept research on the background of the Net and what we stand to lose if the control of the Net is habded over to countries that have little or no regard for free expression or thought. After doing so i bet you will change your silly little mind. | |

| UN and the Internet This is a meeting to discuss the UN taking over the responsibilities that ICANN has now. The UN should never have anymore responsibilities(power) than a place where the Governments of the world can meet and discuss international issues. Only private enterprise should run the business of the internet. By no means should the Government be taxing the internet. They have never taxed mailorder, they should not ever tax the internet. Besides, should the Government be taxing the flow of information, free speech, or any other type of communication? I don't think so. | |

@xmission.com | Re: UN and the Internet Oh, I almost forgot. Keep in good contact with your Government. Especially the young(18-50), the young pays for the mistakes the old people make. Which today happens much too often.

| The UN taxing the world for internet? ------------------------------------------------------ The likely result will be some form of compromise, with only certain oversight responsibilities (security, Internet taxation) being transferred to the UN. -------------------------------------------------------
A compromize???
Great, another tax that goes to some department for undisclosed purposes to benifit the few and harm the many.
The UN for security, HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. those are two things that go great together, like like oil and water, nomatter how much they get mixed they will always sperate. The slick political types always seem to float to the surface and everone else seems to be the water underneath.
UN should stand for Until Never, because Until they get the point of freedom, Never will anything get accomplished that will benefit the world.

| Oh no....oh noooooo if the UN gets control of the internet...God save our techno-geek souls. What moron thinks they can do the internet right if they can't freaking do their original job of world peace? screw the UN....if we(USA) were smart we'd pull out of the UN and watch it crumble...damn people trying to force the US to obey everyone else's crap just because we can do things that they can't, just because we're bigger and better...deal with it I say. Deal with it. -- When someone annoys you it takes 42 muscles to frown about it but it only takes 4 muscles to extend your arm and punch the crap out of them. | |

1 edit | Thank God we have the USA
Because there is nobody but the USA to rule the world. We (USA) know what is best for you, as long it is in our interest. Imagine, somebody outside the uSA is running the interests!
No more USA who wants to declare its national laws on the internet as standard for the whole world.
Imagine that.
SOunds like music for non-usa people in the world!
COme on, perhaps the UN isn't the best organisation for controling the internet, but don't think the USA is the ONLY one who can do this.
