Comments on news posted 2003-09-05 09:54:13: A considerable cross section of our members here at DSLR have chosen to participate in something known as "Distributed Computing"; to that end we've assembled a primer on how to put your spare computer cycles to use. ..

Just helping out

I've never heard of some fo the teams listed above before. However, I can say I'm a proud member of the Team Discovery project to help find a cure for nearly 1 1/2 years now.

Also, another goal of United Devices.....

....besides cancer is searching for a cure for smallpox. I think this is an extremely important use of resources (while many others do not share this opinion). If smallpox was re-introduced to our now largely uninoculated world, the devastation would dwarf anything that cancer does. That's why I crunch on smallpox.

I agree timcuth. They seem to be winding down the Smallpox part. Since they have put the Cancer program on most of my boxes.

Nope, please don't feel slighted because that is not the case at all. The SETI team was asked to participate, and volunteers were solicited here »Is anyone thinking of this post? but nobody responded in time. It is a great opportunity to promote the various team efforts here and none of those efforts should be considered useless.

Unused CPU

I have participated in a couple. Most of the programs have a setting where the priority of the project can be set, with the default to be the least important. This means that anytime a demand is placed on the computer's CPU, the project lets anything and everything go to the processor first. There is no change in computer speed for anything a person wants to do. However when something like getting to a web page that you want to read happens (like this one right now) then the program again begins to utilize your computers CPU, as you read. Painless, non-intrusive, and a nice thing to be involved in.
I'm currently on team Starfire (SETI) which has moved to 6th place on the world club list.

Re: Just helping out

I actually have an old pentium 200 that is dedicated to just running SETI@home. No keyboard and no monitor (KVM switch), just a box running the software.

Pretty slow though. I thought that since it would be running 24/7 it would crunch better, but its real slow.

Where are they?

For those of you who don't know, I've been maintaining a team map for those who run one or more DC projects: »home.comcast.net/~seaquake4/map.html

There are about 500 people listed there, though there are many more involved with the various clubs.

 Worthwhile efforts

Of all the things BBR has done, with the forums & interesting subjects and discussions offered, IMHO, the DCC projects are THE most valuable..
They offer folks the opportunity to actually do something, and "be a part" of something that can reward humanity with tangible results!! Hopefully, in the near future..
A BIG "thumbs up" to BBR, and the DCC projects and participants who un-selfishly contribute to them!!

A shameless "plug" for TEAM HELIX now.
Drop by the forum, and look 'round. This place is "the best kept secret" in BBR!! You will find some of the most friendly, and helpful folks in BBR here,(not to mention, we have LOTS of fun!!)

BBR RC5 Project team now 18th in the world!!

As of last night, we jumped a spot.
By the time the contest is over...BBR could potentially make it to 14th or 15th in the world. Not too shabby.

I noticed the same thing...my UD agents have switched over from LIGANDFIT-SMALLPOX to straight LIGANDFIT for cancer in the past few days.

Count Me In

I am with Team Discovery. It's just too bad my Pentium 4 at home is not crunching. It have no Internet access due to a tight budget until further notice. Before anyone mentions dial up, I don't have a LAN line.

All those wasted years surfing the net....

I am a proud member now of Team Discovery...using all those unused cycles crunchin' for cures. Project Hope is our newest and brightest endeavor...fueled by our desire to attain that goal much quicker and more probably.

Aside from all that, the forums any of our dedicated teams frequent are in my estimation the most personable, friendly and extended family one could ever hope to have.

Much more worthwhile time spent online IMO.
