Comments on news posted 2003-05-28 14:05:01: Users in our Comcast forum have been complaining that their 3.5 Mbps down/ 384kbps up service simply isn't fast enough, despite the fact that most Comcast customers see speeds half that impressive; though perhaps not for long. ..

No more monopolies

Verizon made their move... now the chess game begins.

Both companies were content with keeping their monopolies and low speeds and high prices and sucky service.

Verizon lowered the prices, now comcast has to counter. It's only going to get worse for these companies (which means better for the customers)

not if they raise there speed for the same price. 3.5/384 for 45 bucks a month is pleasing to me..

This is a catchy title

I am a Cable subscriber since @home. I purchased the ATT Ultralink service (3000/384) back in September, before the take over by Comcast. I have never seen the 384, but my downstream has been rock solid. I do wonder why I am not receiving the 3.5/384 like the rest of the Comcast Pro subscribers, that is what I am paying for at any rate.

My main worry is that Comcast hasn't fixed the Over-Subscribed ATT network. Instead of pushing for more subscribers and putting more strain on this troubled network, I would wish that these upgrades would be moved to a priority level. Every since Comcast has taken over I have had a very unreliable connection. Not just cable internet but TV also. There are times when I lose both services for many hours. I have never lost cable TV before and I must admit I was at a loss in my little home with no internet and no cable TV. Please Comcast!! Fix your network and stop advertising for new customers. It is in your best interest.

if your losing your connecion during the day they might be doing upgrades to the network. i know when they were upgrading my area i would lose tv (no telephony or hsi at the time) from early in the moring till around 5 pm or so.
if its other than that i would call a service ticket in and have them come check it out.

What move? Verizon hasn't expanded their DSL-serviceable areas and Comcast swiped the rug from underneath. Now Verizon is finally "waking up" and reconsidering their deployment strategies. Somehow I don't think Comcast has anything to worry about because as long as they provide good service (e.g., matching price increases with speed/reliability hikes), their customers won't bolt if Verizon bothers to provide DSL service sometime in the future.

I think Verizon is starting to see death by a thousand cuts. They didn't bother to provide the services their customers wanted, and they are paying the price. I have a feeling that if phone number portability allows for customers to move their landline phone numbers to their cell phones, many more customers, on top of the 650,000 who have already ditched Verizon, will begin to follow suit.

Verizon chose to become obsolete here... I for one am not shedding any tears for their lack of interest in the broadband game.

Re: Now!!!!

I agree with you. To bad even with the speed increase it will still be much less then what I paid $42/month for about 1 year ago. Is there any ETA for when a speed upgrade would happen. I'm already in the process of switching to Verizon now, so if this is one of those might happen in a year deals then good by comcast.

I think it is hilarious you people moan about "I only have (pick speed) down and (pick speed) up. " Some think it is there god given right to have better. It is the market that drives whether or not they upgrade their systems. There is no market(or very very small) for super fast net speeds.

Re: Check and Mate

Comcast has been slowly advancing past Verizon. They haven't made any "Major News Headlines" with anything they've done, except for upgrade the comcast users upload to that of the AT&T customers they bought out.

Verizon's made the first big bold move to try and keep up. Right now it's starting to pull customers from all over the place to them.

Comcast has probably been working on a way to crush Verizon... as these plans are new to us, but are probably well-known amongst comcast execs for several months now.

If comcast ups their speed, it'll be over for good for Verizon.

Don't they offer that Comcast Pro package where you are? I think you get 3500 down and 384 up.

And still no service

Comcast has informed my village that it'll be available within the next 2 years (we've been hearing that for 4 years). Therefore, I am going with DLS.net (»www.dls.net/services/wireless.phtml), even though the installation charges are hefty. The speeds are un-matched in my area (up to 10Mbps/10Mbps). For other companies, the speeds are 0 up / 0 down.

 Oh yeah!

As a Comcast customer, I am really looking forward to these speed upgrades. I know a lot of Comcast customers are in fact. However, they will not come overnight as we all know. I know I have been skeptical of news like this before. A lot of people will say, "Time will tell." Well, in broadband technology, it is a forgone conclusion that the speeds will go up. That much is certain. It may not happen for a year or two but it will happen.

Now, as for more upload bandwidth, I would like to see it. However, there are a lot of people who run FTP servers, Kazaa, and so on 24/7. If the upload bandwidth goes up, then there better be a pretty major amount of bandwidth to go around. Just raising the 384k bandwidth to 640k could be a pretty big problem. I am pretty content with 256k for a while. I don't upload that much at all.

I say kudos to Comcast and I hope to see those increased speeds down the road!
