Comments on news posted 2003-04-03 17:11:46: There's a good reason why AOL, after years of treating broadband like a loud, drunk uncle at an upper-class family get together, has recently decided to turn on their broadband jets. ..

No plain text email?

I read a report today that AOL 8.0 doesn't let users send plain text email. If this is true, it's going to drive away more users.

Evolve or go extinct

Too little, too late, I'm afraid.

AOL waited way too long to decide what they wanted to do. They could have had a large portion of broadband, but they were asleep at the switch.

How do you increase the profitability of narrow-band subscribers? Is that AOL-speak for Raising the Rates? That'll really keep them.

Narrow-band users are jumping from AOL like rats from a sinking ship. The rats know, the people want to live in denial that the Titanic won't sink just a while longer. We know how that turned out.

"Building awareness" of broadband. Sounds like Pop-Up Ads to me. How else do users find out about anything. No wait, maybe it will be a "Downloading New Updates to Your Service, Please wait 1 hour..." message and BOOM! you're broadband.

I could go on...but I'll let the dead rest in pieces, ie: Spin off AOL again.

Aol Email

I hear a lot of people say they keep the Aol just to retain the @aol.com email address they have. But I recently discovered I have an aol.com email address I didn't even know I had, based upon my registration for AIM. My question is, if an Aol subscriber cancels the dial-up, but uses the Aol website to access the email address or uses that screenname for an AIM account before cancellation, wouldn't that user keep the same email box even without the service?

Re: Evolve or go extinct

I am currently a proud member of Earthlink's cable broadband service. X member of AOHELL broadband. First of all AOL advertises an "always on connection" but to be online you have to have their window open AT ALL TIMES! And AOL’s software constantly crashes. So imagine all the lost downloads and websites! AOL is late on broadband and should just transfer their customers to a better ISP.

If you want broadband I suggest Earthlink Cable at Http://Earthlink.net

Ummmmm....

The definition of plain text is no style, color, or size. Just text. Like in the DOS days.

Re: Aol Email

you don't keep your @aol.com email address if you cancel AOL service. You do however keep your AOL Screen Name and can use it with AIM. You get a free SCREENNAME@netscape.net email address with AIM

Re: Evolve or go extinct

First off, AOL is no better or no worse that earthlink....and I'm a former member of both. If anything earthlink sucks more because AOL is geared for newbies...and is easy to use....earthlink is traditional internet....appropriate for more experienced users.

AOL's new broadband push is heavily centered around their BYOA plan....where you pay AOL 10 bucks a month for @aol.com email and other content....along with paying your transport ISP, like DSL or cable.

I agree that AOL's "true" broadband offerings were not upto par, but that will change.

I reactived my AOL account last week because of all the great content I get. CNN etc. also, you get parental controls, great if you have young children and spam protection.

AOL is the only online SERVICE out there...all other ISPs merely provide a transport to the internet. I have full T1 at my house but that just gets me bandwidth...not an online "service"

AOL is a BIG company...TIME WARNER is an even bigger one....companies this big take time to steer. Anyone remember how late Microsoft was to the internet party? Give them credit, they are trying. I personally like the idea of being able to get all kinds of content for 9.95 as opposed to paying 10 different contect providers 5-10 dollars each.

You're lucky.

My AIM screen name (left over from a previous AOL account) won't let me sign in at www.aol.com, although I keep getting AOL mail notifications in Trillian.

Is this a bug specifically with AIM accounts?

I think it is a bug when you use a former AOL screen name with AIM. The same happens to me...

Not any more... AOL DSL users are now connecting directly with their routers or running RASPPPOE to establish "client-less", full time connections - permitting PS2 and XBoxes to connect as well!

Do you have a webpage with info on this? I have a few friends and grandpa that would love to do this.

That's all well and good, but AOL specifically denounced any interest in broadband. It's not so much about a large company taking time to turn over, but more about a large company resistant to change. Same goes for Microsoft. If I recall correctly Bill Gates denounced the Internet as a phenomenon that will never go anywhere.
