Fun times north of the US border too

Up here in Southern Ontario we're looking at rain and 60+ MPH winds starting tonight and into tomorrow.

Should be interesting seeing what happens when Sandy hits the cold front that is currently sitting over us, might even get snow outta this schmozzle (thank god I was dumb enough to have the snow tires installed last week already )

Durham,NH like a ghost town

Here on lovely frat row in Durham it was a suspiciously quiet weekend as I hibernated nursing a cold. Ventured out to break my coffee fast and discovered a near abandoned village with half the businesses either closed or posted to do so early.

Turns out the 17,5000 student university (which is the town) on Friday announced Mon & Tues closure, encouraged students to skedaddle and asked staff & faculty to stay away. Place has been running on fumes for 3days. I was greatly taken aback until told the real reason for closure.

Usually UNH produces the bulk of their own electricity but the co-gen plant has been offline for routine maintenance leaving the campus 100% dependent upon grid. Apparently they scrambled but couldn't complete the work before the weekend arrived.

Moderate blowing all day but no power interrupts yet.

Comcast & Power Failures

Disappointed to see that Comcast failed immediately with a power outage--no signal to the modem. I assumed their network would stay up for some period of time with battery/generators...

Is this typical, or just my bad luck in this particular neighborhood?

VZ FIOS never went down with power failures (i.e. it would last as long as my UPS/generator)

I think Grandma is without power

Tried calling Grandma (who has Time Warner phone) and got an error message. Called her neighbor (who also has TWC phone) and it was out as well. I wish TWC would use batteries in their EMTAs but on the other hand a cordless phone is as good as a modem when the lights go out.

Would love to install a standby generator at grandma's house (I could do the electrical part myself, but would leave the gas/LP part to a gas fitter) but there are gas lines nearby but not directly in front of her house. If I were to ever call the gas company and inquire about service, I would ask for a site survey (that is how close she is to existing gas lines) as opposed to relying on a call center rep reading off a screen (as an adjacent business has gas service). Otherwise I would have to drop in a 250 gallon propane tank (except grandma is deathly afraid of propane and won't even let me keep a grill with a 20 lb tank on her property so I have to grill with charcoal at her house).

Would love to convert her house to either NG or Propane heat, as heating oil is a dirty and outdated heating method and expensive.

Re: I think Grandma is without power

Oil is not that dirty or out dated. it is very much keeping up with technology. Our house in CT had an oil fired boiler running just below 90%.

For hot water though I am happy we have gas, the gas hot water does not require power to operate and we have city water so we have cold and hot water regardless of power.

That's good news. We were without power for about 12 hours last night and this morning but my mom had power. I'd much rather have it that way than the reverse.

Standby generators are great. I actually just got one installed at my grandmother's house this February. Luckily she does not live anywhere near the hurricane regions, but she still has frequent power outages. She got a 20kw unit (18kw technically since it is using natural gas instead of propane) and she is very happy with it. My grandfather used to hook up a generator to the tractor, but that is completely impractical for her to do herself.

I have a standby generator myself. 20kw watt unit powered by a 1000 gallon propane tank. If you can afford it, I recommend it. Interestingly, since it was installed I have never used it for more than an hour. Prior to that I would have day long power outages several times a year.

That isn't going to help California. Most of the water in the southwest comes from the Colorado river. For the past several years, there has been more water being drawn from the river than there is going in, so that the reservoir levels have been consistently going down. They need massive snows in the Rockies to replenish some of that.

We get that. We were saying that a storm like this would help if it hit in CA. Numerous places got more than 2 feet of snow. Davis, WV had at least 28". Pick up said storm and transport 3000 miles west.

Re: its sunny here

So what it's sunny in California, it's only weird when it isn't. I mean you DO have problems with forest fires eh.

Meanwhile here in the twilight zone aka City of Kawartha Lakes, well the sun is shining, it ain't raining, and on my daily walk to the mall it wasn't windy, it was warm though (snow? not expecting it to do that), and all I was concerned with was drying off the sweat at Tim Horton' while enjoying my drink.

All while supposedly sitting under a generational storm that has trashed NYC and everything near it and even Toronto got booted around having power outages etc and tree damage.

Rod Serling must have visited here to get the ideas for his show.

I am concerned for friends stuck under this bitch named Sandy, but living in the dullest place on earth in addition to the safest place on earth, I have not suffered any.

Didn't rush out to get water or batteries or other foods. Why? no one else in town is.

Looking at the radar images and it is hard to relate to the fact I AM after all sitting under that image (somehow).

Wife went to Peterbough last night for shopping. I cautioned her it might not be a good idea approaching nasty storm and all of that.
Interestingly, the rain that was hitting Peterborough stops the moment you hit Victoria County. Their drive home was fine.

Everything back to calm in seacoast NH

Comcast went down for ~7 hours here and just came back on 10 mins ago. Power stayed on throughout which is backasswards from usual. A door slam will usually darken this burg.

Nice & quiet now. 5-10 mph breeze, steady soft rain, warm. Headed out with the dog. Here's hoping those without power are quickly restored.

Is Sandy why CBS was so weird Monday evening?

Is the storm causing the CBS oddities? David Letterman show was a hoot tonight with no audience and half the crew missing.

What was really odd though was Hawaii 5'O was advertised last week, and Sunday evening, as being a new show Monday night with a Halloween theme. What I saw three hours ago instead was a rerun of Hawaii 5'0 from last year. Plus, during the breaks, Hawaii 5'0 was advertised as having a new show Monday evening and the ads said it was Sunday evening yet it was Monday evening showing ads from the evening before ...CBS national ads. There were other ads from last week shown during Hawaii 5'0 airing Monday night. Those ads were promoting the The Good Wife episode that aired last night and were saying it was a new episode ...those was last week ads being shown earlier this (Monday) evening. There was an ad for Criminal Minds dated last year....all sorts of weird stuff on CBS Monday evening. I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming. As for the new Hawaill 5'O episode, I don't see why it wasn't aired, at least here in Hawaii ,because it is filmed here so there is a local copy that could have been aired if there were transmission problems from New York.

During the 10PM local news on our CBS affiliate station, while watching all the coverage of the hurricane, I was thinking how grateful I am that Hawaii's tsunami scare Saturday night was just a scare and thinking that my grumbling about having to evacuate because of it was minor compared to the devastation of this hurricane. My prayers go out everyone affected by it.

I read that at least a couple of the major networks temporarily ran master control out of LA rather than NYC last night. I'm guessing their LA staff was more concerned with keeping the network on the air rather than details like promos.

Just lost Cable Backup Batteries

Well, lost power in Allentown PA last night at 9pm, Fired up generator at 5 AM and still had Cable, Telephone and Internet with Service Electric. Then at 6:30AM the backup batteries died for the cable system, now using AT&T wireless modem plugged into ASUS RT-56U, never tested this setup before but it works.

Service electric will not go around and charge the batteries so we are out untill power is restored. RCN does come around with generators and recharge the batteries when they fail.

I guess the backup batteries on all that tech(between Boston and Orlando) are running low..

And NYC major hubs failing:

Flooding from Hurricane Sandy has hobbled two data center buildings in Lower Manhattan, taking out diesel fuel pumps used to refuel generators. There were also reports of outages for some tenants at a major data hub at 111 8th Avenue, and many other New York area facilities were running on generator power amid widespread utility outages.

Both Internap and Peer 1 are completely shutting down operations at 75 Broad Street after basement-level flooding disabled critical diesel fuel pumps, leaving the providers now way refuel generators on mezzanine floors.

There were also multiple reports of downtime for some tenants at 111 8th Avenue, a major communications hub which is owned by Google.

We lost power around 7:30 PM, the peak wind gust was 70 mph. I'm running on a generator right now, Verizon FiOS works fine.

The tree is removed and the street is clear. I asked the tree removal guy (township contractor) why they got to it so quickly.

It turns out that no one wanted this job because it was difficult. So, he just took care of it. It took over an hour and was a real trick to remove.

All of the neighbors watching the action (including me) thanked him - he appreciated it.

To anyone else who can do nothing but watch these guys in action (electric utility, public service, etc.), thanking them for their efforts goes a long way to make it worth their while.

No one in the neighborhood has any power, but we made the best of it last night. We invited the neighbors over for dinner.

My better half got his grill out, somebody brought a steak, someone else chicken, we threw in some fish. The most important contribution was paper plates and plastic flatware.

A modern day version of stone soup. Dining under candlelight was a blast; something we haven't done in quite some time. Party!
