 | They're Kidding, Right? $65 for 1Gb of data? Is that a joke? |

winsyrstrifeRiver City BouncePremium join:2002-04-30 Brooklyn, NY | $65 seems like a lot for one cell phone. I'm currently re-evaluating my own services. I'm getting sick of my my T-Mobile plan (for my wife and I) cost of about $110.
$60 shared minutes plan or whatever, which includes 700 minutes. We're on fire if we break 200 voice minutes...
$2.99 x 2 for 600 text messages, of which 42 were used for the month. Meh...I think I'm going with Google Voice or Kik.
$17 in taxes and fees.
The data plan is $20 for 2GB. I'm about to end the month, and I'm barely at 80 MB...I'm coming from a 2G phone, so I don't really care about data. It's nice to have on the go, but I just check-in and check-out (weather, news, e-mail). I might end up dropping the data altogether unelss there is a 100-250MB plan or something like it.
Is there a cheaper plan I should be considering? Nothing seems feasible for 2 phones... -- "Suddenly everything is fainting, falling from a broken ladder's rung. | They control the pipes Since some MVNOs use the Verizon/AT&T pipeline, the big duopoly could close the valve on MVNOs at any time without notice. Yes there is sprint/t-mobile but AT&T/Verizon are the only ones with the best coverage. The only real competition is if you are lucky enough to have US Cellular or C-Spire in your area (and the first of the two refuses to carry the iPhone).
I have Verizon postpaid and I like getting a bill every month instead of having a call drop because I ran out of minutes (and you have to run to the gas station or cell phone store to buy more minutes). You also get more privileges with postpaid. When I had prepaid years ago (back in my high school years), I had Verizon Prepaid (back when it was called FreeUp) and you did not have access to anything more than talk, text, and 411 (no roadside assistance, handset insurance, etc) and when your minutes ran out, your call dropped. Also with prepaid, roaming was more costly as you had to pay more if the tower was not owned by Verizon (extended network). -- I wish I still lived in Iowa; Everything there from rent and groceries to Cable TV is much cheaper in Iowa (especially with an overbuilder in town). |

Re: $65 seems like a lot Ting Wireless (Sprint) - Pay for what you use, will allow sprint phones soon (ever additional phone only $6/mo. They have addl taxes though. Virgin Mobile - 300 minute (unlimited) $35 or $25/mo if you buy a grandfathered phone (triumph, a few LG's). I pay $24 a month because I buy refills and pay no tax. (Sprint) Pagepluscellular (Verizon) The $12 (250 min, 250txt, 10mb), there is a $30 one w/ lots of min/txt 100MB/data Tmobile prepaid - $30/mo - 100 min, unlimited data/text. This will mean you can use the same phone.
If you are in Brooklyn, Sprint works well in most areas.
If you are a low user, Ting is probably the way to go, because if you don't use a lot, you don't pay a lot. I would wait until they do BYOD, and then you can get a used Sprint phone and attach it to the account. They let you pool all your min/txt/data. For instance what you say you are using would be about $30/mo for TWO phones. |

You do NOT need an unlocked iphone, all you need is iOS3 or above that supports carrier profiles from unlockit.co.nz and you simply install the carrier profile for either an ATT MVNO or ST. I have been using ST for 7 months now with zero issues with data doing this. |

Don't know about you, but I have used so far on this monthly billing cycle 2.5GB according to my phone over cellular, and have not been throttled or heard a peep. |

Re: $65 seems like a lot You could switch to the TMobile $30 a month prepay plan with 100 minutes, unlimited texting and 5GB of 4G data. Go Google voice if that isn't enough minutes, or pay .10 a minute after that. It's only available on the website or at Wal Mart. You would cut you and your wife's monthly bill in half. |
|
 | ?!? what a damned ripoff!!!! why even bother?!? you can buy this kind of service for as low as $25. |

Re: $65 seems like a lot If you are on contract and require contracts to keep the newest and nicest phones in your pocket, you'll probably do no better than what you already have.
If you want to go contract-less, you can do a 30 dollar a month for unlimited data and texting and 100 voice minutes. So for both lines would be 60 dollars a month total, and that includes most fees and taxes. |

Re: Straight Talk It's not unlimited either. There is some chatter that if you become one of the 5% ers on a tower, they will throttle you to dialup, so good luck getting over 2GB, and there is no warning. The price is $45, but there is a good deal of risk in that. And it depends if you are using at&t or Tmobile SIM.
Iphones sometimes work and sometimes don't and certain features may or may not work.
If you have good Sprint coverage and not a lot of min, VM $25 plan is great price, or upcoming Ting.
For AT&T, Straighttalk is the best right now if you can live with random throttling. For TMo, Tmo $30, and I hear Solavei will use Tmo towers. Verizon - Only pageplus. And that's $55 for 2GB but only works w/ 3G phones (using LTE phones a real challenge).
Gophone only has crappy smartphones, so this is more of a check the box until they get some real phones. |

Re: They control the pipes I thank you for subsidizing my pageplus phones and keeping the cost low
MVNO's have contracts, so the line owners just can't turn the off, and in the case of Sprint (VM/Boost) are actually owned by Sprint.
In the case of Pageplus, part of the original spectrum swaps has PPC getting access to Verizon (they are the only MVNO) as part of those conditions. I haven't found an area where a PPC phone doesn't work in my travels.
Prepaid has come a long way since the days you are referring to.
My wife VM, is $25/month for 300min unlimited text/data. If she goes over, VM just charges $10c/min. You just keep money in your account.
My old verizon line was $120 for my thunderbolt last year (I wasn't paying). Granted it was unlimited everything, but those days are over. So it takes me 5 months to get what my company was paying for one month of Verizon. I like big red, but not if I'm paying.
Sprint is even allowing 4G LTE on MVNO as soon as it's available on postpaid.
I love contract people. They pay the profit margins for the bigwigs and wall street, and dump their phones on ebay for a song.
Us bottom feeders get used phones and pay reasonable rates. In fact if you want the latest phone, you can pay full price just like Verizon will make you if you want to keep unlimited. |

| Wireline mentality in a wireless world. So I can get the privilege of paying $20 / mo more and getting 1 GB of data less than if I use Straight Talk? Go %#@& yourself AT&T. OK here goes some of the other users have given there insight to options you may want to look into, however most of the comments seem to focus on data and substantial amounts of it. I sir am probable going to give you the most cost effective option that has not been mentioned and covers all 5 of your issues ( as long as your not still under contract or when you get out of it).
In 2 words....."Simple Mobile"
1) paying $110 a month for 2 phones, Simple mobile $40 plan is for you. 2 phones $80 a month saving you $30 a month. PLUS unlike the other options people are suggesting (exemption to 1 straight talk plan) no need to purchase new phones as its TMO network Simple Mobile uses. So your current and past TMO phones will work just fine. 2) Unlimited Mins with simple for $40 each line. 3)unlimited txt, even if you dont fancy it its included. 4) unlimited data included even if you only use 80 MB its there if you need it. 5) The plan you should be considering as it would save you of the top $360 per year and no need to purchase 2 new phones.
Also If your wife does NOT use data you can give her the $25 monthly unlimited plan talk and txt, so your bill could only be $65 a month for 2 phones Almost half of what your currently paying TMO. I believe this may be your best options. |
