Comments on news posted 2012-09-21 12:48:29: Though a parade of gushing, uncritical reviews have proclaimed the iPhone 5 a device created by gods that was perfectly hewn from the metal of the ancients, back on planet earth all is not well within the church of Apple. ..

Maps...along with everything else

They completely trashed the App Store too. Now instead of showing 12 apps and giving Dev's a snowball's chance of being discovered the list was replaced with 4 giant bandwidth hungry thumbnails. The store is too pretty for its own good. Apple has a tendency now to "fix" stuff what wasn't broken.

iOS6 is a disaster all the way around.

Did anyone notice that Apple posted a bunch of map related engineering openings over the past month prior to this iPhone5 release?

Someone released the phone early to get the bonus.

Toxic thread

I have a dumb phone, a Nexus 7 and a Motorola Xoom - I have no dog in this fight. But I do have a comment.

When the Xoom came out it was a piece of crap. And everyone said "Give them time, it will get better" and it did. Apple doesn't get that luxury. All I see here is a bunch of people bitching about relatively minor issues in a new product and proclaiming (loudly) that the sky is falling. It isn't, and Apple has a good track record of improving their software over time.

Just buy something else. Nobody is forcing you to spend money on an iPhone. There are other phone manufacturers out there, all happy to take your money.

Apple is a solid company selling products that many people are happy to buy and use. They have the highest customer satisfaction ratings for their products and their customer service according to Consumer Reports. They also provide jobs for 60,000 Americans and according to various web sites have an employee turnover of less than 4% per year. Reading this thread you would think they were a bunch of idiots who couldn't find their collective ass using all their hands.

What a bunch of whiners and haters we have here.

Re: Toxic thread

I think the bashing is directed towards the users more than Apple itself. Those who proclaim Apple cannot fail now sit with a broken application after paying a couple hundred for a new phone that does not work properly.

This thought process that Apple cannot do no wrong and people without thinking blindly purchase a new product is probably what irks the majority of the android base. Instead of looking at specs, users look at popularity.

Then of course when you are in public normally an iPhone user feels the need to boast about his or her product more than anyone else almost like a child.

The justifications and thought process get old and the majority of the time invalid. This is why iPhone users get stereotyped because android is not seen in the proper light either.

So I think this bashing will continue until some form of logic is formed that these devices are merely "phones" and are designed to fit the needs of specific individuals.

Just my 2 cents.

Re: Toxic thread

Those are all valid points. It's almost as if the Apple and Android camps seem to have a religious fervor about their respective products, and are as upset with the supporters of the other product as with the product itself.

For some reason the Android folks seem much more vocal about trashing Apple (and its supporters) than vice versa. From reading many comments in this thread and many others on the web I get the impression that many people feel it's more important to trash Apple than to support Android, as if every Apple sale somehow diminishes the standing of their Android product.

Of course, the Apple supporters do the same sort of bashing - but they don't seem to have the same level of intensity and loathing as the Android crowd.

Re: Toxic thread

I think what get's me as an android user is really the cult behind it. As a previous apple user myself I felt Apple products made a lot of sense back then but ever since the introduction of the iPod the company took a turn. Now I guess Macs were actually getting some recognition and the strict Apple lovers now followed Apple as if it were a religion. If I bought an Apple product I got support from the community, if I was complaining about an Apple product I was considered a hater.

My last draw was when Apple did not want to replace the motherboard on my Macbook and fix it after the warranty expired even if it was a "silent" recall. I eventually got it fixed but after receiving it from factory I later sold it to a friend of mine who wanted a Macbook.

There was no sense in speaking towards this community of people because it reminds me of those who walk towards your door preaching about Jesus but damn if you question him. Of course take my opinions as you wish but thanks for reading.

I am an Apple user, for things other than the phone (have a Mac and an iPad. Your assessment is spot on.

Folks don't get it when I slam Apple. Which I do, regularly. My interests in their products aren't from hype and all the usual fanboi rhetoric. I like to change it up and challenge myself to use something else. That and I get bored with my tech. : )

I've had an HTC EVO for 2.5 years or so, and honestly I am pretty bored with it. I do like the iPad and prefer it, so it kinda made sense to try out the iPhone 5. So I am.

All of my systems are tools, not toys...at least not entirely. : ) Being in IT I run stuff on these that most folks don't, much like most of my colleagues who have both OS X and iOS devices.

So hey we will see. The navi products on the Android have been pretty good and got better over time as well. I will probably buy the Garmin Navigon app when I get my phone.

I have nothing against Android having used it...but am ready to try something else for awhile.

Sensationalism

Calling it "really awful" very much overstates the problem. It has some small glitches but 98% of the maps are great.

Re: Sensationalism

I used the new maps on iOS6 to get various locations in San Diego, CA and all along the I-5 corridor to Tacoma, WA. Not a single issue.

My dad used it in Cincinnati as well. Zero issues (and I asked!) for him.

iOS6 maps is actually MORE useful to me now because of the turn-by-turn I didn't have before. I recognize there are issues for others, but this is being blown out of proportion IMO.

Re: Sensationalism

Agreed. The traffic is better (more real-time data from crowd sourcing) AND it only shows the trouble spots rather than those constant green lines everywhere that Google Maps had (which were annoying in cities and stuff where screen real estate is at a real premium) AND iOS Maps shows you exactly where the cause for the delay is and what the reason is (roadwork, accident, etc.)

I always been distant to Apple for many reasons

I bought an iPhone 3G it was okay but over time with the forced iOS updates with AT&T it got progressively slower. Now from reading this thread all I can do is shake my head. With the fact that OSX is Linux which is open source OSX is not.Um since when can one violate a GPL like that? Apple can. They can do whatever they want to do because they have a lot of money due to overpriced under-powered devices they sell. I distrust any company that is well... A BULLY! They will bully their way to having everything, suing Samsung to get more money to sue others to have the exclusive market on smartphones.

This is not uncommon to release something so the person in charge of the project can get the big bonus. This could be the reason there was an issue with Longhorn (Vista) release. They rushed it out so the project leader can get a bonus. This proves one thing... WAIT... Never go out and get the shiny new OS without waiting a while so they can get all the *rush bugs* out of it. I am saddened that fellow Engineers and Computer Scientists are doing this. What is the rush? Is it the lure of money? Or is it that they want to piss people off?? It is up to you to decide why Apple did this....

This is my opinion and I am in no way bashing, just my feelings over how stupid the computer world has gotten lately. And I am going to school to get into this field....

OSX is largely based on BSD, which is covered under the BSD license. Unlike GPL which states that all changes you make must be given back to the community from which the original came from, BSD has no requirement.

Under the BSD license, you can change things all you want and you have no obligation to submit it back to the community.

Vista wasn't actually rushed out. It was supposed to come out in 2003-2004 originally. Xp service pack 2 had alot of the features Vista was going to have.

When they finally was about to release Vista, all of the driver makers were tired of believing that it was gonna come out and refused to believe it. Look this up online.

Yes Vista was many times better than XP. I had Vista on six machines at home and had no issues with it. Of course Windows 7 was even better. Hopefully Windows 8 keeps up their track record. But I'm probably only going to upgrade four of my machines to it.

You have much to learn. Darwin is based off nextstep and freebsd and is in fact open source. Apple is the single largest contributer to open source software in the world.

Slashdot -- Feature: GPL vs BSD
quote:
When using the BSD license, your software is just as Free as when you use the GPL. However, a company can take your code, incorporate it into its own proprietary product, and (depending on the type of BSD license, with or without advertising clause) you can receive no compensation for your work, perhaps not even credit. If that's exactly what you want, then the BSD license is for you. However, it seems just a little bit dangerous for a lot of Free Software authors.
You can also say that because of this difference between the BSD license and the GPL, any changes to the source code a company makes to incorporate the code into their proprietary product (in this case, MacOSX), Apple doesn't have to give the community from which the code came from any credit at all. They don't even have to give back changes to the community either.

There's a reason why Apple chose BSD, they want to keep their hands on their changes. They are very secretive of their software.

I was disappointed in the Maps as well..

I'm disappointed in the built in Maps app by Apple. I loved Google Maps and hope/look forward to them releasing their own Google Maps app (assuming Apple approves it). I do have faith in Apple resolving this and making it better. Apple takes a lot of pride in it's products and it realized that people use their products because they're reliable and easy to use. With the uproar about these Maps, I'm sure they are going to devote a lot of time and effort to make this app a little more functional and accurate.

I'll stick with IOS 5

it works and does what I need it to do. I'll wait a few months until they fix the maps. There's nothing in IOS 6 that I really want; I just don't want things to break from where I am now.

If It Says Apple

the fanbois will wait in line like lemmings to buy it.

It's the herd mentality going awry again.

The only Apple product I own is a 2GB iPod my son gave me when he was a kid and outgrew it. I'll never buy an Apple product.

Ah, and Android doesn't have a herd? You seem to fit that role pretty well.

The haters are just as bad, if not worse, than the fanboys and mac cultists.

Disappointing.

The maps app is fucking garbage, and I've had a good old time reconfiguring a bunch of Lotus Traveler accounts whose passwords were inexplicably wiped during the 'upgrade.'

IOS 6 and maps

I use Google maps for my business in real estate. Google maps is essential for my business and I am now thinking what I would have previously thought unthinkable....switching to Android.
I may be premature, but this colossal arrogance on the part of apple could well be the beginning of their decline.
How dare they take away a good product and force us to use their rubbish.
