250GB/year or 250MB per month

I doubt 250GB/year (though for $50/year that would be nice)

?

At their press event today Amazon hinted at the fact that users could upgrade to 3GB and 5GB data plans, but they didn't give spice specifics on those options.
Are we cooking with data today?

I love those spicy data plans but sadly, they usually give me heartburn in the end.

$50 per year with a monthly data cap of 250MB
That's 250 GB per MONTH for $50 per year.

$50 per year is a mere $4.20 per month. That's in line for 250 MB per month. Hmmm..250 MB. That's less than two Lady Gaga YouTube videos per month.

9" Fire can compete w iPad given Amazon media availability

The new Kindle Fire HD 8.9" version(WiFi only or LTE) can successfully compete with the current iPad v3 VERSIONS(WiFi only or 3G). The price is better and the Amazon cheap or free media makes it a definite competitor. And the yearly data plan for LTE is a nice bonus for the Kindle.

We'll have to see if Apple announces any upgrades next week to the iPad as well as a new LTE iPhone.

Re: 250GB/year or 250MB per month

Those must be some looooooong YouTube videos. Seeing as how 1 Mbps video (YouTube is less) is 7.5 MB per minute. So 250MB per month spread over two videos would be 16+ minutes per video.

250 MB / Month???

Enjoy watching your ONE television episode on Netflix each month before reaching your cap.

Hooray for ridiculous data caps! I can just smell the progress we are making with regards to digital content distribution.

Title needs to be fixed

250 MB per MONTH for $50 per YEAR

Which makes perfect sense...just over $4 per month for a quarter-gig of data. That's $17 or so per GB. Not great by any stretch, but much, MUCH better than what you could get directly for AT&T in that quantity, for pricing or data volume.

I have a feeling that I'll be picking up this device just so I have something that can use AT&T LTE, for testing. Though at $500 I can afford to wait until another firmware revision or two rolls by.

You do video streaming and downloading a movie to the Fire on WiFi - not on 4G data plan. The 4G data is to get an email on the move or an IM from someone. Use the device as it should be, then the cap isn't a problem.

Amazon already fired a shot across Apple's bow with its $499 Kindle Fire, which Bezos compares directly to the iPad. He argued that the total cost of the Kindle Fire plus its $50 annual data plan -- $549 -- put it well iahead of the $959 that it would cost for an iPad and LTE data plan for the first year.

Your point?

AT&T is the underlying provider here. They aren't going to undercut themselves. The 250MB is there so you can surf the web (no video) and download eBooks (not TV episodes) while on the go. For those activities on a tablet, it's a completely reasonable amount.

Agreed, it's a surf the web and email initial offering. I'm surprized amazon could get them this low for an entire year.
To put this in perspective your paying $4.19 a month for this 250mb a month plan.

Yeah, gotta agree on that. With wi-fi as common as it is, finding access won't be an issue. And, while you aren't going to do much heavy duty access with that cap, it's entirely reasonable for light stuff when you can't get wi-fi.

And what do you expect for less than five bucks a month?

Even a modest 20 Mbps LTE connection can download 250 MB in about 1.5 minutes. I realize that $50 per year is very cheap, but come on. 250 MB/month is practically nothing.

8-9 MB per day. Have fun with that on a tablet. I use way more than that on my phone, and I don't stream any media to it.

The much rumored Amazon smartphone didn't happen

There was talk all week about Amazon also announcing a smartphone to do battle with the iPhone. But it didn't happen and was not even brought up at all at the Amazon event.

Re: 250 MB / Month???

Think about it this way: with that little data, you'll make a concerted effort to use the tablet on WiFi whenever possible.

If you do that and don't tether (speaking from experience with my iPad on a 1GB plan), you'll stay under 250MB.

I don't understand why Amazon would need or want to make a smartphone.. It's just dumb.
