| wonder... how well it'll handle the onslaught of people wanting to download tons of crap.
If it were my only connection, I'd find a way to schedule all manner of things during those hours. Updates alone will probably bring the poor bird to its knees. ...can't imagine what a torrent would do, let alone several at once... |
|
 | Good idea. If you have a cap, it sure seems like a good idea to be able to schedule downloads during the a.m. to avoid going over, but I'm sure people will complain about this too... |

| Two good a deal for all other ISP's to offer! Remember before unlimited nights and weekends for voice. Why not a similar offering for data. If unlimited usage were offered after 12PM by other ISP's then software developers could add a feature to applications so that user could schedule their software updates when usage was not charged against their CAP (allotment). Leave computer on and schedule all updates to be automatically uploaded during free period. No excuse regarding protecting customer experience after 12 Midnight. |

| The sad part is...... Exede said....."., you can take advantage of 5 hours of FREE Internet usage to download movies, games, music, and software updates"
FREE???.... Am I not paying you for service in the first place, so this is hardly free. This is just them allowing more data down your pipe essentially just upping your cap per month, thats all this is but it surely is not free. This is identical to what cellphone carries did with the whole "free" Nights and weekends bit. Really look were that is now. In all regards Excede when you allow me to purchase your dish and equipment and then download as much as I want between midnight and 5 am and not pay you one red cent, (similar to Google fiber option) then you can holler out FREE.
The good.... your getting more data. The bad... your still overpaying for a crappy, capped, restricted service. The ugly... in certain areas ( not just rural) if you want service this is your only option and theres not a damn thing you can do about it. |

I'm surprised the CSU/DSU doesn't include a USB port to connect a hard drive (250GB should be enough) so you can cache content locally in the first place. If they were so worried about capacity, wouldn't this make sense? |
|
 | This won't end well It's obvious what's going to happen here. Everyone is going to set up large downloads during these times, so capacity is going to be strained to the breaking point. |

Not a big deal. The goal is to encourage downloaders to time-shift to the unmetered window, so that interactive users can have a faster connection during the day. |

 | reply to ISurfTooMuch Saturation at night isn't going to affect service quality for most critical customers who operate during the day. |

BF69Premium join:2004-07-28 Camden, TN | Doesn't help with streaming services like Netflix or HBOGo or Hulu Plus or Amazon Prime. None of them have a "download now, watch later" function as far as I know.
It's a start and puts them more competitive with Verizon's HomeFusion that gives you 30 GB for $120. Still they have along way to go. |
|
 | It's a bit of a trade off. More usage compared to HomeFusion, but much more latency. So there is no clear winner. |
|
 | Not if your a gamer homefusion hands down wins. i play ncaa 13, cod: black ops try that with sat haha. |

I give it six months. |

 | reply to BF69 said by BF69:like Netflix or HBOGo or Hulu Plus or Amazon Prime. None of them have a "download now, watch later" function as far as I know. You could rig a caching proxy (start the movie at midnight, immediately pause it, the cache continues to fill, you watch the next evening).
Or, record the movie to your DVR, then watch the next day. |

Re: Fail HughesNet has had a cap free window (2-6am) for years now. They seem to be doing just fine, though speeds are not guaranteed during that window. |

| This is good... I pity those who only have satellite 'net access, but a meter-free period like this definitely softens the blow. Now folks with exede can actually think about backing up their computers online; it might take awhile to seed the initial backup over a connection that may or may not hit 3 Mbps during the free period, but it's better than not being able to back up due to super-low caps.
As a side note, a connection pulling at 12 Mbps for the full five hours of cap-free time could download 27GB in one night. On the upload side, 3 Mbps over five hours would be 6.75 GB per night. So you can download more in one cap-free period than ViaSat's highest-end package allows in a month...this goes to show how tightly ViaSat is controlling peak capacity, but on the flip side you could actually download more over ViaSat without incurring overage charges than you could on Comcast! |
