PC upgrade time

Went on a small shopping spree at newegg the other day to upgrade my pc a bit. Bought another amd 6870 so I can crossfire with my other 6870, a western digital 1tb green for movies, music, 2 new 120mm trispeed fans for my push/pull radiator system and a blu ray player with playback software. Accessory wise I bought a new 2.1 40w logitech speaker and a thermaltake usb hard drive dock.I was thinking of upgrading to a solid state drive but right now its too much of a hassle to get everything back up and running.

When I build my next rig in 2-3 years, definetely going solid state. Oh and also rebuilding my desk with a bigger piece of stained maple plywood.

Smartphone users unhappy - big surprise

Looks like a poll has figured out that smartphone users are pretty unhappy with many things about their high priced companions.

About 9 out of 10 Americans have cellphones, and the vast majority report problems with their devices, according to a survey by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project.

The biggest complaint was dropped calls. According to the survey, 72% of cellphone owners reported experiencing dropped calls, and almost one-third said this happens at least a few times a week.

Another issue was unwanted sales and marketing calls, which 68% of cellphone owners reported. One-quarter of owners said they have this problem multiple times a week.

About 70% of people who text said they get spam or unwanted text messages.

Of the more than half of cellphone owners who use their phones to go online, 77% reported slow download speeds.

Smartphone users had more complaints than their non-smartphone-using counterparts, according to Pew. Thirty-five percent said they encountered dropped calls at least once a week, compared with 28% of other cellphone users.

However, maybe smartphone owners are just more sensitive to glitches.

“As mobile owners become fond of just-in-time access to others and as their expectations about getting real-time information rise, they depend on the cellphone's technical reliability," said Pew researcher Jan Lauren Boyles.

"Any problems that snag, stall, or stop users from connecting to the material and people they seek is at least a hassle to them and sometimes is even more disturbing than that in this networked world," Boyles said.

They as well as the others should be doing this at last 2 years earlier than that.

Well let's see all these companies roll out these 4G networks and their "awesome" speeds then basically limit you to 2 GB a month. What's the point?

GPS

hmm, use a smartphone for GPS, which eats into your data cap, or a dedicated GPS unit that has nothing to do with data caps ... which would you choose?

I chose option #3 use my dual core smartphone with its built in GPS chip and my 32gb micro sd card to run Copilot live... now....

1) No need for 2 devices traveling around.
2) No data usage as copilot has the entire United States and Canada map stored in 2GB of my 32 GB card.
3) Not a bad trade off in my opinion and I never have to worry about if Im not in 4G cell tower range my GPS acting up ( cant load fast enough) or in a rural area with no data and it not worrying at all.

I agree. legacy stuff needs to be phased or people will never progress. It is kind of like IE6, MS continues to let people cling to it by still supporting it.

Thank you Comcast for lousy customer service

Comcast Internet went out at 10:15 PM ET and called customer service and I am tired so I cannot think straight. The fact I knew more about troubleshooting cable than the CSR on the phone shows that Comcast does not care about pleasing customers and they can take advantage of their monopoly/duopoly situation.

This is why I would like to broadband ISPs (such as Comcast) to meet the same fate as Bell System/AT&T.

The only other option is DSL, which is like comparing a payphone (DSL) to a cellular phone (DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem).

Some alarm radios will be rendered useless as some don't have 3G capability.

My alarm uses a good old phone line to connect to the alarm company. I am too cheap to pay the cost of installation and additional monitoring of a cellular dialer (since I can never wean myself of having a home telephone, that I don't use that often but I like having E911 capability in this high crime area).

Re: GPS

I had OnStar FMV installed in my vehicle because I have had too many accidents (all but one were not at fault due to the lousy drivers in New England) and I pay extra to get the navigation.

I may sell or trade my vehicle though because I was sold a lemon.

Anyone watching the Mars lander planetfall?

The latest Mars rover, Curiosity, will be making planetfall between Sunday and Monday (10:30 PM PDT, 1:30 AM EDT). Anyone here planning to watch it live?

Unlike the previous rovers, this one won't be bouncing on the surface of the planet in a big ball. Instead, this rover will be tethered to a rocket propelled platform that will deposit the rover on the surface, cut the supporting cables, and fly away to crash at a safe distance from the rover.

It always amazes me how much NASA tries different ways to stress everyone beyond belief with a landing on an alien planet!
